Promoting a New Web Page

I don't do this with every web page, but when I really want to promote a new web page I have a certain process that I go through. I'll talk about this in regard to a travel guide I have been working on for the last few months, Qatar Visitor.

Blogging it

First I blog it: I do a post on the Qatar Visitor blog which links to the web page I want to promote. For example, I recently did a page of information for working women on my website and I did a related post on discrimination against working women.

When I do a page on the website, it can take up to two weeks to get indexed by google. However, when I do a post on the blog, it is instantly all over the web on rss feeds, on google alerts for Qatar and is often picked up by other blogs.

Also, for some reason, people are far quicker to link to my blog than to my website. Perhaps that is why my blog has a page ranking of four while my website has a miserly pr of 3. (Update - now a much more respectable 5!)

Why don't I just do the original page on the blog? Quite simply because my visitors to my website convert into money, while visitors to my blog don't. And also my website picks up a lot more visitors, despite its lower page ranking.

Social bookmark.

For an important page I will click on the addthis social bookmark button I have at the bottom and add it to Diggit, Reddit and Stumble upon. I will also get the other people involved in the website to do so too.

Squidoo, Hub and Work.com

Then I add a link to my Qatar Guide lens, and also to to my Qatar Guide Hubpage - not a single link, but a section. If we add a relevant section the link will add higher for relevance. I make sure that the link text is relevant - not click here for more information, but read more about Qatar Jobs. Note that adding a section like this has the added advantage of improving and refreshing your lens.

More recently I have started to add pages to Work.com, as an added source of relevant links to my pages - or links to the pages which link to the pages I want to promote. You can see my guide to Doing business in Qatar. I've also very recently started doing a whole new lens on a subject, such as my lens on Qatar Jobs.

Spreading the word to the right people

I also let people know about the piece. I have a close working relationship with a related website, Qatar Journal, which provides Qatar related news. When I email him with an important new page he will do a short post on it - which means it get emailed to his thousand or users the next day. Of course, he knows that I will help him out when I need it.

I also do a post on a related forum, Qatar Living. However, I am careful not to abuse the forum. I never use it to publicise anything commercial, only high quality articles that will be of interest to the users of the forum.

Exhanging Articles for Links

One method I recently used for promoting a couple of web pages on Qatar Visitor was to write an article, A Helping Hand for a local newspaper, the Peninsula.

Not only are newspapers highly regarded by Google, this newspaper hardly ever links out, meaning that all its link juice is souped up inside. Consequently, links should be more valuable than normal.

While getting on a National Newspapers of most countries may be just too difficult, small regional papers or specialized magazines and journals should be eager to snap up quality free material.

Wikipedia

I only occasionally add a page to Wikipedia. However, although only half a dozen or so of my 400 page website are listed on Wikipedia, it accounts for about 5% of my traffic. However, for a page to be listed on Qatar the page has to be extremely relevant to the topic, of a very high quality and not too commercial. If your page does not match these factors it will not last long!

More ideas for promoting webpages?

I am always looking for more ideas for promoting individual web pages, and would be grateful for any comments.
