Keeping The Visitors Interacting By Finding The Stumbling Blocks

So you got a web page and you've been told to split test it. As that's what all the big guys and guru's say you're suppose to do.

However, what if your headline is fine - instead it's something further into your web page or sales letter, which is stopping your customers dead in their tracks and leaving your web site.

Meaning you could be split testing until the cows come home. A long time and still not be much further ahead as you would never know what is the stopping block.

One, Two, Three Why You Split Test

Lets first review what split testing is and for our example lets keep it simple and use Vitamins.

A Vitamin company sends you a letter by mail with the intent on you buying some vitamins from them because their letter was so good.

To be sure the Vitamin Company sends a good letter they split test the letter with two different letters selling the same product.

A total of 1,000 letters will be sent.

500 of letter A.

And 500 of letter B.

Whichever letter receives the most paid orders wins and is called the control.

This control letter can be further split tested, by split testing the Headline with Headline A and Headline B. Or the signature split tested.

The goal is to find the letter which sells the most product, as you don't want to be spending money on mailing letters which don't make you money.

This is the same for your website.

It costs to host a website, plus the time and software needed to put a web page online, you want to make sure your getting a good dollar return for your efforts.

However as shocking as it sounds few internet marketers do any type of split testing. Sure they know they should but...

And I can see their point - it does takes a lot of time and needs software to do it.

One of the Major Search Engines has a website where it's split testing on steroids. You can split test more then two items at a time and all different parts of the web page.

But to use it you need to have over 1000 unique visitors a week. If not you're back to A / B split testing.

Finding Your Webpage Troubles Look For Cold Blue 

Then Turn Into Red Hot Motion

To show you the importance of seeing visitor ghosts and heat maps, I'll use my website as a live example.

It's a discovery page about how you can learn to hypnotize people your friends, without leaving your home to attend hypnosis classes.

The headline on the hypnosis website seemed to be working drawing the visitors into the web page. As shown in warm and hot heat map colors over the web page.

However there were few sales resulting. Meaning the visitor reached the hypnosis site, was hooked into the website with the headline... but somewhere in the letter got lost, and left.

To find the stumbling block or blocks in the hypnosis web page I turned to another part of the software which produced heat maps.

A good quick example of a heat map we are all familiar with is a color photograph or chart which has blue as cold then warms up to green, yellow, orange and red hot. You may of seen a person in a heat map the colder parts blue and warmer yellow, orange and red.

The heat maps are complied from many of your visitors navigation through your web page.

For the hypnosis web page the goal is to have hot red and yellow through out the page right to the end.

However that wasn't the case and this is where it was easy to locate the stumbling blocks in the page. The places where it turned cold blue means the visitors didn't think much of it.

What was found to be some of the stumbling blocks were the sub-headlines. And once changed and tested, the page started to warm up.

It's really interesting seeing what changes do make in your visitors navigation and retention on your web page.

Traffic Analytics Answers Will Jump Out At You 

By Seeing Your Visitor Ghosts

And what if you want to know what your visitors are doing on your website.
Are they reading your web page or skimming it?
Are they jumping to the bottom of the page?
Where do they leave your page?
Where do they click?
Are your visitors clicking an image and not the link?

Questions split testing A / B can answer "Don't know".

Though there is simple software you can use and find out how far down your website visitors are actually scrolling. Able to see for yourself how many are skimming and where problem spots are on your web page.

To use the software you will have to enter how much traffic you get a day, then generate a couple of lines of code you put on your webpage, at the top and at the bottom of each page you want to keep an eye on.

Then relax and wait an hour or more as your visitors explore your website. Go into the software by visiting the visitor traffic analytics website and logging in.

What you see won't shock you, that's still up coming. You'll see a standard type graph listing of the visitors, country, time, how long on your webpage instant information.

Simple Quick Summary. See the play buttons on the left? That's what you press to see your visitors ghost on your website.

You can further click the buttons for more information, however if you click the button which looks like a play button, you're in for a surprise! Up will pop a new window enclosing a video of your visitor navigation through your web page.

Yes, it quite shocking or a little bit errie seeing how your visitor navigated your web page and site.

It's like watching little ghost movies, because you see where your visitor is on your web page, scrolling, clicking left or left mouse and again seeing how fast they are scrolling and clicking.

What you gain by seeing with your own eyes these ghost movies of your past visitors is how they go through and scroll down your web page.

You get to see where the stumbling blocks are in your web page and see them scroll past them or stop and exit. Making it a snap for you to know what to fix. The guess work has vansished.

You'll know your next visitors will stay on your web page clicking and buying as you've seen the stumbling blocks and have easily fix them.

Seeing Discovery after Discovery Looking At Your Heatmaps 

Brings Hot Changes

Here's another finding using the heat map.

It was found visitors where clicking on little image graphics buttons which where used as bullet images on a list. They were clicking but not going anywhere and would click again and still not go anywhere. It looks like they left in frustration the page.

Simply by removing the little bullet graphics it seemed in an instant the visitors now kept reading of the page as the heat map warmed up in color.

Another finding, then you'll have to see what interesting findings you find on your own webpage, is removing big buy graphics increased clicks to purchase.

Yes, I'd just purchased a graphic package and was pretty happy with the purchase. Tested out the larger and medium size buy order graphic buttons and received no clicks on them.

This was the same time when it was being known the visitors were clicking the little graphics which looked like a link. Yes, I went "Mmmmmm" rubbing my chin.

Removed the graphics but one, it would be the control and changed the graphic links to a text link. And yes you guessed it, the click through went up.

Now learning this much about my website as you will yours it would be difficult to find this out by only split testing as we talked about above split testing Headline A and Headline B.
