Studying Us
Anthropology and YouTube
An anthropological introduction to YouTube
presented at the Library of Congress, June 23rd 2008. This was tons of fun to present. I decided to forgo the PowerPoint and instead worked with students to prepare over 40 minutes of video for the 55 minute presentation. Has Web 2.0 Been Successful?
What is Web 2.0
'
Category: Image - :Web 2.0 Map.svg|thumb|A tag cloud presenting Web 2.0 themes
"Web 2.0'" refers to what is perceived as a second generation of web development and web design. It is characterized as facilitating communication, information sharing, interoperability, user-centered design and collaboration on the World Wide Web. It has led to the development and evolution of web-based communities, hosted services, and web applications. Examples include social-networking sites, video-sharing sites, wikis, blogs, mashups and folksonomies.
The term "Web 2.0" was coined by Darcy DiNucci in 1999. In her article "Fragmented Future," she writes
Her arguments about Web 2.0 are nascent yet hint at the meaning that is associated with it today.
The term is now closely associated with Tim O'Reilly because of the O'Reilly Media Web 2.0 conference in 2004.
Although the term suggests a new version of the World Wide Web, it does not refer to an update to any technical specifications, but rather to cumulative changes in the ways software developers and end-users utilize the Web. According to Tim O'Reilly:
However, whether it is qualitatively different from prior web technologies has been challenged. For example, World Wide Web inventor Tim Berners-Lee called the term a "piece of jargon".
Where is this going?

So what do you think about this new culture we've created?

It's interesting to think of youtube from the anthropological viewpoint. Maybe it will be discovered millions of years from now, and people will think "Who ARE those weirdos???" LOL!!!
