Web 20 Marketing
Welcome to my lens about using Web 2.0 services to market you or your business on the Internet.
Web 2.0 defined as:
Web 2.0, a phrase coined by O'Reilly Media in 2004, refers to a perceived or proposed second generation of Internet-based services-such as social networking sites, wikis, communication tools, and folksonomies-that emphasize online collaboration and sharing among users.
But please....
What is Web 2.0?
Teaching The Machine About You
The Basics
So.. from the videos we learned that Web 2.0 is really just us teaching the machine, teaching it who we are, what we like and that the machine is us.
We learned that text digital text is more flexible than written text. We can move it, but above all digital text is hyper. Hypertext can move and link virtually anywhere.
We learned that form can be separated from content. What does that mean? Well simply put the end user does not need to know complicated code to create a website and upload it to the Internet.
It's as easy as going to Blogger , creating an account and presto you have a Blog. You can select a theme you like and starting adding your content. BTW - content is simply what you want to share with others. Its text, video, images or anything you want.
If Web 2.0 is really just us teaching the machine, how do we teach?
When we post and then tag pictures we are teaching the machine. When we post on a Blog or forums we are teaching the machine. Each time we forge a link we teach an idea. As mentioned in the video think of the 100 billion times a day humans click on a web page. These people are teaching the machine.
So we have determined that Web 2.0 is linking people..people sharing, trading, collaborating...
So lets get to the business of Teaching

Getting Indexed Using Social Bookmarking Sites
Social bookmarking is a powerful way of getting your sites indexed and also generating backlinks to your pages. Over time, these backlinks will become increasingly powerful as many of the social bookmarking services are gathering a huge amount of PR which filters down into the sub pages.
So What Is Social Bookmarking?
Social bookmarking is a Web 2.0 concept. Normally when you visit a site you like and you want to come back later, you create a bookmark or add a favorite in your browser. Social bookmarking takes this one step further by allowing you to share your bookmarks with others.
In itself this is a pretty cool technology as individual bookmarks can be tagged and commented on, so if Lisa is into Webkinz Trading Cards and bookmarks a great site and tags it with 'Webkinz Trading Cards', other members of the social bookmarking site can then search for sites about Webkinz Trading Cards and her recommendation should come up. This is a great way to find relevant sites about a topic without having to investigate every link in Google.
But social bookmarking really comes into its own when you look at it from a marketing point of view. By bookmarking your page at one or more of these sites you are creating a link directly to your content and at the same time are telling Google what the content is about. This does four things.
1. It creates a keyword rich backlink directly to your content from your bookmark page.
2. It creates additional links on the tag pages which also help to 'define' what your page is about.
3. Over time these pages gain PR which is passed on to your page.
4. Ultimately it gets you indexed very quickly by Google and the other search engines.
This is a powerful weapon in any marketers arsenal and it is one you should be using every time you create any content such as lenses, articles, or web pages.

Avoiding Goolge's Social Media Slap - 2009 Edition
Survive being roughed up by the big G
Early in 2009 Google had all but completed it's algorithm update to further refine the search results they are delivery. It appears there are several changes in what is being displayed now for many competitive keyword phrases . Things like Google News, Google Blog Search, Google Base (formally Froogle) and Universal Search are playing a much larger roll when delivery the search results Google thinks the user wants.
The current Google update appears to also be paying more attention to the incoming links to a web site. If the url only has incoming links only from web .20 bookmarking and social media sites and no other places like blogs then you can may see a shift in your rankings.
It has never been advised to only use web 2.0 properties for you only source of linking. These services do indeed give you the ability to control your incoming anchor text but they should not be the only places you use to build back- links. Google is way to smart and will figure out that it looks like one, or up to a few, person(s) is building methodical linking networks rather that the linking seem more organic. Naturally organic will win out ever time.
One way to help you combat the social media slap of 2009 is to look at Google's results and get your site into those results.
How Can I Do This?
Google Blog Search - setup a blog, write to it occasionally, ping Google's blog service.
Google News - Write press release. (free service wont get you there though)
Google Base - if you have a product you can add it to their database.
Bottom line: spread yourself evenly across the net and you'll be fine.
