I am a fan of one of the greatest music decades of all time, the 70's Music. I created this lens to pay tribute to all the artist internationally and locally because they were my influences to become a music lover and why I appreciate music so much.

I created an unofficial complete list of the artist/groups of the 70's and you can visit the site at  70's RETROPHILIA

The Greatest Music Decade of All Time - 70's Music

The 1970s are generally remembered as a era or time of transition for pop and rock music. This was the decade in which music went from 1960s type of pop at the start to Disco music towards the end, which in turn was the rhythm that led the music world into the 1980s.

By the 1970's, the term "rock & roll" had become nearly meaningless. This decade saw the breakup of the Beatles and the death of Elvis Presley, robbing rock of two major influences. Pop music splintered into a multitude of styles: soft-rock, hard rock, country rock, folk rock, punk rock, shock rock - and the dance craze of the decade, disco! But whatever sub-genre(s) you preferred, rock music was big business.

Among the top names in popular music were Aerosmith, the Bee Gees, David Bowie, Jackson Browne, Alice Cooper, Eagles, Electric Light Orchestra, Emerson, Lake & Palmer, Fleetwood Mac, Billy Joel, Elton John, Led Zeppelin, John Lennon, Pink Floyd, Bob Seger, Bruce Springsteen, Rod Stewart,Three Dog Night, and The Who. "Easy listening" regained popularity with groups such as the Carpenters, and Bob Marley gained a huge core of fans in the U.S. performing Jamaican reggae music.

During the '70s, bands and singers also benefited from the production of 8-tracks, which effectively became a new source of revenue for many singers and groups worldwide during the era.

Most Disco dances have strong roots in Swing, Samba, Cha Cha, Mambo, Merengue, Fox Trot and Tango. The Hustle is believed to have originated in New York in 1970. It went through many variations in the seventies, with line dances for groups of people, solo movements that came and went, and partnership dances. These partnership dances included The Basic Hustle, Latin, Spanish and Tango Hustle, and the most popular Street, Three-Count or Swing Hustle that originated in California as the street Hustle by skaters in Venice and Malibu. John Travolta and "Saturday Night Fever" made dancing the "in" thing for many people, especially men.

Popular disco music of the 70's included Bee Gees "Stayin' alive", "Night fever", "More than a woman" "Everybody Dance" (Chic) and Donna Summer's "Love to love you baby".

Hustle is danced to the contemporary pop dance music of the last 20 years. It is a fast, smooth dance, with the lady spinning almost constantly, while her partner draws her close and sends her away.

Fads, Fashion & Style

The Influence of the 70's

Mood rings, lava lamps, Rubik's cube, Sea Monkeys, smiley face stickers, and pet rocks all captured the imagination of Americans during this decade. The wildest fad surely was streaking nude through very public places! Families vacationed in station wagons and everyone wanted an RV.

The fashion influence of Sixties hippies was mainstreamed in the Seventies, as men sported shoulder length hair and non-traditional clothing became the rage, including bellbottom pants, hip huggers, colorful patches, hot pants, platform shoes, earth shoes, clogs, T-shirts, and gypsy dresses. Knits and denims were the fabrics of choice. Leisure suits for men became commonplace, and women were fashionable in everything from ankle-length grandmother dresses to hot pants and micro-miniskirts. The movie Annie Hall (1977) even inspired a fashion trend with women sporting traditional men's clothing such as derby hats, tweed jackets, and neckties worn with baggy pants or skirts.

70's Lyrics by "Jim Croce"

I'LL HAVE TO SAY I LOVE YOU IN A SONG

WELL, I KNOW IT'S KIND OF LATE
I HOPE I DIDN'T WAKE YOU
BUT WHAT I GOT TO SAY CAN'T WAIT
I KNOW YOU'D UNDERSTAND
EVERY TIME I TRIED TO TELL YOU
THE WORDS JUST CAME OUT WRONG
SO I'LL HAVE TO SAY I LOVE YOU IN A SONG

YEAH, I KNOW IT'S KIND OF STRANGE
BUT EVERY TIME I'M NEAR YOU
I JUST RUN OUT OF THINGS TO SAY
I KNOW YOU'D UNDERSTAND
EVERY TIME I TRIED TO TELL YOU
THE WORDS JUST CAME OUT WRONG
SO I'LL HAVE TO SAY I LOVE YOU IN A SONG

(LEAD BREAK)

EVERY TIME THE TIME WAS RIGHT
ALL THE WORDS JUST CAME OUT WRONG
SO I'LL HAVE TO SAY I LOVE YOU IN A SONG

YEAH, I KNOW IT'S KIND OF LATE
I HOPE I DIDN'T WAKE YOU
BUT THERE'S SOMETHING THAT I JUST GOT TO SAY
I KNOW YOU'D UNDERSTAND
EVERY TIME I TRIED TO TELL YOU
THE WORDS JUST CAME OUT WRONG
SO I'LL HAVE TO SAY I LOVE YOU IN A SONG ........
