What Sam Colt did for the Second Amendment, Cafepress has done for the First. It has made all persons equal.

Cafepress is far from the only POD provider, but it offers the widest range of products and arguably the best single user solution, suited to the production and sale of one item for individual use or 10,000 units shipped overnight.

Print on Demand has made it possible for individuals to effectively "own their own printing press." There is now an ability for a single person to equally compete with huge corporations for visual space within many vital contexts.

Of all the vital contexts there are, public space is the most critical to our form of democracy. The T-Shirt and the protest sign are fundimental units of First-Amendment speech.  Well, no longer are individuals limited to untelegenic excercises with fabric paint and felt markers. They can use the same tools used by gigantic corporations and marketers, and are not limited in their statements to those considered "marketable" or permissiable.

The idea behind this lens is to look at Cafepress (and perhaps related services) as a means to an increasingly visible end. We will be looking at three interelated goals.

Making Money

Creating Visual Presence

Putting small groups on an equal footing with large ones.

My Best Sellers

These are the items I've made that make consistant sales

Three things seem to give a product good "legs."

First; it must make a great visual statement, even if it's text only.

Second, it must speak to something that people are concerned about or interested in.

Third, it should have as broad appeal as possible.

Sales pick up on this every time Bill says something dumb. It's not a cash cow, but keywording makes it come up in the same searches that point folks to the latest public stupidity.

Teddy Says Bumpersticker

"To announce that there must be no criticism of the president, or that we are to stand by the president right or wrong, is not only unpatriotic and servile, but is morally treasonable to the American public." - Theodore Roosevelt (1918)

A statement about criticism of a sitting President by one of the most famous and recognisable Republican Presidents of all times - and a wartime President to boot.

It is a statement that can be taken to heart by both Liberals and Conservatives, speaks to broadly shared values, and is a direct refutation of those who would call such criticism "unpatriotic." It's as pointed as any "Impeach Now" sticker and yet as uncontraversial as a US Flag.

This quotation, on various products, is not just MY best-seller; it's found all over Cafepress in a wide variety of shops.

Teddy Says Bumpersticker (Black & Yellow)

This particular combination of text and color is by far my most popular version of TR's famous quote, It may well be one of THE most popular, I've literally sold hundreds of this design.

Teddy Says Bumpersticker (Red & Black on Yellow)

NOT my most popular, and probably due to the fact that the primary text is red. People who buy bumperstickers know they do fade in time; and what is glaringly readable today will be a visual smudge in six to eight months.

A glimpse of what fellow cafepress members are saying about a current issue.

I've been telling people - particularly political people - for years that if you want to see what people seriously think - AND what sayings they think will resonate enough to make a profit - cafepress is the place to go. In it's own way it's got the information content of a serious polling organization.

Today's Keyword is "2nd Amendment."

Are Gas Prices a pain? Help share your pain with a legislator by buying one of my shirts! The two best-selling designs tagged "gas prices" will be sent to all congressional leaders. I'd like it to be mine - because it's got a specific message for them!

"When it all came apart, Enron had nearly bankrupted the State of California, caused their stockholders to lose virtually all of their investments and destroyed the pensions of their employees. And what was it all for? Greed, the thing that Gordon Gecko told us was good. "
Antitorture
I disapprove of torture, and I think the time has come where we actually need to say it out loud. Strangely enough.

Read The (Fine) Memo!
READ THE FINE MEMO and make up your own mind. Limbaugh and Hannedy says the Downing Street Memo is a lie, a fabrication or irrelevent. Is it? It should be pretty obvious if it is. Check it out. Because if it's NOT a lie, then the Administration lied about the war. Lied, and sent good young men and women to die in a war that the American People, Left, Right and Center, would not otherwise have supported.
