update: Newest added charities are now on top, easier to see what was updated ;-)
This is W3 (read www ;-), everybody fights for him/ herself, but a small but powerful gang works for the benefit of others. Want to join the gang? Visit some of the sites below and change a live - for free! Consider also to help at by blogging about these sites, stumbling, digging them etc. If you have a moment, please stop by and help to make this planet a better place, without looking at race, religion, color or gender.
OK, finished the sales pitch, thank you for your kind attention. I have checked these sites thoroughly - and used some of them! Below you'll find my personal review and opinion about each of them, including some warnings about a rather fishy one!
By just spending a few minutes of your time on one or more of these sites you can make a huge difference for somebody. Some of them require more time and involvement, but like always "you receive more then you give". If you have no time at all to get involved consider at least to spread the word about them by blogging, digging, stumbling or linking to them. Thank you!

Kiva
micro loans that change lives
Remember this old saying?"Give a man one fish and he has to eat for a day, teach him how to fish and he has to eat for the rest of his live"
This is what Kiva is about, in a nutshell. The simplest way to help is giving a microloan (minimum amount is $25) to one of the suggested investors. This money helps to finance grass root projects in developing countries. After your first loan has been repaid (yes, you get your money back!) You can decide if you want to re-invest the money or to withdraw it.
Part of my royalties here at squidoo go to Kiva, to help to make a difference...
Another way of getting involved, via Squidoo, with Kiva is the SquidKiva group/community of lensmasters, have a look at their lens Squidoo Kiva for more information.
A video about and with the Kiva founders
Watch Matt as he explains how he made the decision to quit his Silicon Valley job and work full time for Kiva. And listen to Jessica as she describes her pre-marital problems, which actually led to Kiva's birth! Be sure to read Matt's blog, The Kiva Chronicles, on socialedge.org!
Hugs and Hope
Hugs and Hope is a Christian web site (please don't run away screaming now!). Perhaps I should have better said a web site/ project founded by a Christian and with a Christian ethos, that is open to all. This project has now developed quite a bit and requires even more involvement then the previously mentioned one. The basic idea is to provide a bit of extra sunshine for seriously/ terminal ill kids and their families by sending them "happy mail" and perhaps, little gifts. The contact is made via a "middle person" to provide privacy of kids and parents. There is ample explanation on the web site on how to get involved and most important how to write really, really HAPPY mail. Quote from web site:"Happy Mail" Wanted for ill children. Children fighting for their lives have very little to smile about. You can change that by sending them some "Happy Mail." Cheery
cards give these kids a few more smiles, a little more hope, and a reason to
get out of bed each day. Experience the satisfaction of making a sick child's
day and giving them something to look forward to. Send a card and a hug -- one
of the smiles you create just might be your own!"
Freekibble&Freekibblekat

Now a nice one again ;-) Actually two nice ones...FreeKibble and its sister site FreeKibbleKat were founded by then 12-year-old Mimi, yes you read right: 12 years old girl founds web site that helps to feed homeless cats and dogs in shelters.
Every day you can answer one new, trivia-style question to improve your canine/ feline knowledge (the questions can be quite tough!) and the site provides in exchange free kibble to animal shelters to feed their hungry animals. There main sponsor is Castorpolluxpet but they have also other people/ businesses advertising on the site. It is a great little site, oops, these are two great little sites that I have bookmarked and visit as often as I remember ;-)
Attention! Cheap impostor!
Don't fall for them please
So and now a BIG warning about these guys: http://www.freeflour.com (I made this link not clickable, as I don't have any (link) love for this cheap imitator.Clicking the link "Sponsors" on their site shows:
"Our donations are made possible thanks to our sponsors and you, our active visitor. We are currently displaying Google ads to generate money for the flour
donations. By visiting the links below you are helping the cause." And then
come the google ads...
Apart of that this is against the Google Adsense TOS (encouraging visitors to click your ads) there is also no information on the site which charities benefit and no proof at all that any charities benefit, no endorsements from outside, i.e. press links etc. It only states on the site:
"Each time you answer a question correctly we donate an amount of money equivalent to one spoon of flour to multiple charities. They use your donations to: Buy food for the hungry. Take food to the hungry. Help the hungry feed themselves. Make sure food arrives in the right place, at the right time."
Nice example of keyword stuffing, but I fear the only ones that get fed with the Adsense income generated are the greedy owners of this cheap imitation of Freerice which is a highly recommendable site and doesn't deserve being copied like this.
Update: I decided to report this site to Google for further investigation, something what I normally not do, but cheating on the good will of others is just so wrong... Will keep you updated further.
Further update: The google ads have disappeared!
FreeRice
Feed the hungry by exercising your brain.
Freerice Is one of my personal favourites; the idea goes like this: For every Trivia question (they have 13 different subjects to choose from) they donate 20 grains of rice to the United Nations World Food Program. You can answer as many questions as you like and the rice is paid for by people that sponsor ads (mostly banners) on the site. I must say these ads are nearly too well integrated, you barely see them.Freerice was Yahoo's Find of the Year 2007
A very nicely designed, easy to use site that is legitimate and confirmed as a partner by the UNWF. Apart of this, exercising these little brain cells is good for you and me, so a win-win for everybody. Hubby and I are sometimes doing trivia-duels on our two computers to see who can win-donate the most rice in the shortest time ;-)
