I've been a connoisseur of the weird, silly and funny stuff on the internet for more than 15 years. A lot of it is pointless. A lot of it tickles one person's funny bone and not another's. But here are many of the best viral videos and humor memes going all the way back to Hamsterdance and the dawn of the web. I call them: WEB FLOTSAM!

Carson Williams' famous Christmas lights display synched to Trans Siberian Orchestra became a Christmas 2005 viral video sensation -- not to mention a Budweiser commercial. Like many viral videos, it launched a trend -- many people now do this!

A sign near the house tells drivers which station to turn their radios to, and the music is broadcast by ham radio. There's a house near my parents in Ogden, Utah that did this with about 20 minutes of Christmas music including "You're a Mean One, Mr. Grinch!"

"The Ballad of Bilbo Baggins" by Leonard Nimoy

Right after Star Trek ended, Nimoy and Shatner each tried to launch a singing career. Both flopped horribly. This song was known for years in the fan community. When the web first came on, we learned -- to our horror -- a music video had also been made. I first saw it as a Quicktime movie posted on the web in 1994.

Improv Everywhere's The Best Game Ever made it hard to choose this year's best funny video, but I'm handing it to Discovery Channel's "The World Is Just Awesome."

The video and old camp song are fun. The stroke of genius was inviting viewers to make their own. Go to this video on YouTube and check the replies to see hundreds of responses, everything from "The World of Warcraft Is Just Awesome" to The Simpsons singing along.
