Web Hosting Review: Real Customer, Honest Reviews

It's been a while I had launched my little project of mine - to evaluate various hosting services by hosting websites with them.

The project had started for 4 months and I'm covering Hostgator, Hostmonster, Lunarpages, StartLogic and Bluehost with an independent blog each; while some other that I do not create a full blog for the reviews are: IX Hosting, HostRocket, FatCow, Web Hosting Pad, Dot5, and PowWeb.

It's been quite a lot of job (in just 4 months!) but I still have a looooong way to go from reaching my target of reviewing 100 web hosts.

I do hosted with some other web hosting before (like Network Eleven and Gate) but I find their services are way too lousy - thus not covering them in my project.

So far I am pretty happy with Hostgator, Lunarpages, and Bluehost; Hostmonster was a little behind the other three and I'll be showing you my experience with each of them later.

Lunarpages a good web host?

Lunarpages is the best budget hosting I ever had. Their latest promotion offers unlimited bandwidth, disk storage space, and addon domain for just $4.95/mo.

What's good about Lunarpages?

The best thing in Lunarpages is cheap.

The low price schemes put Lunarpages ahead of other reputable hosting services behind in my book and I think they should be recommended to anyone out there who're looking for an affordable web host.

Hostgator Web Hosting 

Is Hostgator recommended?

I have been hosting a few other websites with Hostgator previously and I must confessed that I kinda like them before I even started the evaluation.

So, how does Hostgator perform?

Hostgator hosting service is the kind of service that I'll recommend to my friends and families. Server host uptime and load time's excellent, customer supports are effective, and they just switched using green energy for powering/cooling their servers!

The only thing I'm not very happy about Hostgator is that their service is a little pricey when compare to other three. Yes, it's a fair price, but it's expensive compare with most web hosts out there: Lunarpages, Bluehost, Hostmonster, FatCow... etc.

StartLogic Review 

Is StartLogic Hosting Good?

Based in Phoenix, AZ, StartLogic Inc. is founded in November 2003 by Thomas Gorny. While the hosting company is relative new in the business, they are building up pretty fast. At the time of writing, they are hosting more than 100,000 domains.

What's up with Startlogic?

I'm kinda new to StartLogic but it's been doing pretty good in my book of record. StartLogic is one of the very few that offer hosting control in vDeck. The control panel is not as popular as cPanel but they are improving fast. As vDeck is currently upgrading their service, I believe the users base will be growing larger when everything's settled.

Bluehost is like a rock star in the shared hosting industry. Of course, they are not as much well-known as 1-and-1 who smash heavy budget in traditional media advertising; but a quick compare with other reputable host on Google Insights shows that Bluehost is searched (translation: demanded) a lot more than others

So, is Bluehost doing good in my record?

Yes, Bluehost is one hell of a good host. I have been using Bluehost for 4 years. They have the fastest customer supports ever (one of my questions is answered within 2 minutes at their support) and I am pretty happy with their server performance.

Hostmonster Web Hosting 

What's my finding with Hostmonster?

I have high hope in Hostmonster. They are managed by the same management with Bluehost and they are now hosting more than 350,000 domains. At the time of writing, Bluehost claims that they're hosting 1,000,000 domains together with Hostmonster.

But, I guess I am hoping too much from a developing hosting company like Hostmonster.

First, my account was deactivated by Hostmonster for no reason. Anyhow, the supports at Hostmonster was good and they solve the issues efficiently. (I had series of blog posts about this incident) Next, I am seeing some problem with Hostmonster server uptime - it seems Hostmonster server tends to be 'out' for a few seconds frequently. I am not sure why's this happening but that's what my Uptime Tracking Service telling me.

So, is Hostmonster recommended then?

Everything's great with Hostmonster except with the issue mentioned earlier. I like them - they are cheap, the hosting features are great, their software updates are fast, and I like their unlimited bandwidth/disk storage offer.

So yeah, I guess I would still recommend Hostmonster - but only if Lunarpages and Bluehost are not in the list.
