Sophie: A Frisky Feline with a Penchant for Causing Trouble

You can call me Sophie.  I am a Chartreux, at least mostly.  I was a stray.  Thankfully, I was given to a vet clinic to find a home.  I didn't find one rightaway.  Not sure why.  I'm cute enough.  Now that I do, I'm the happiest a cat can every want to be. 

I spend most of my days watching squirrels and the birds that come and go in the backyard.  My favorite time of year is fall, when the back is filled with geese.  Just makes me quiver and chatter!  When I'm not looking outside, you can find me sleeping.  Any place will do, as long as it's warm.

My Take on All Things Cat

Heaven came to me in a big way last week. Based on an article Chris came across, I am now enjoying canned cat food. The gist of the article is this: cats are true carnivores. As such, foods like Purina are an inadequate, inappropriate diet loaded with carbohydrates. What's more, by a Purina salesperson's own admission, they are 90% plant based protein. Cats lack the enzymatic pathways to break down plant proteins, hence they are receiving inadequate nutrition. Why would Purina produce an inappropriate food? Because it's cheaper.

A proper diet for cats is high in protein, low in carbs. The moisture content is much higher in cats which is in line with their physiology and low thirst drive. My diet is now #1 Wellness Canned Cat Food (24/3-oz cans). Because of a concern with teeth issues, Chris is also supplementing my diet with Innova EVO Cat & Kitten Food Dry (15.4-lb bag). While yet a dry food, it replicates the needs of a carnivore. Who can argue with a food that lists its first ingredients as turkey, chicken meal, chicken, chicken broth?

Since I've been on it, my coat is more gorgeous than ever. I'm starting to lose weight. Think Atkins diet for cats. And do I love dinner time!

How We Found Sophie

Around Thanksgiving of 2004, we lost our beloved Ruby. It was so odd. One Friday she was acting cranky and by that Monday we were discussing euthansia. Cancer. With the benefit of hindsight, I know we did the right thing.

We waited about four months before making the decision to get another kitty. My sister told me about a website that helped her find her dog.

I found Sophie, then named Sheba (!), at a vet clinic about two hours away. When we first met, it was truly love at first sight. Even the receptionist remarked on it. Sophie couldn't keep her eyes off of me.

During the two hour ride home, we bonded and are as close as ever. Now I love dogs, but the relationship one has with a cat is very different. It's hard to explain. If you have a cat, you know exactly what I'm talking about.
