Originality is fantastic in web design, age old ideas also work well too, but along with this there are some serious flaws that need avoided when it comes to creating a good transicational website.

Don't distract your visitors with blinking or scrolling text, animated GIFs, or auto-loading sound. This is bad practice in web design!

using lots of different flashing texts and sounds is somthing that can seem tempting and seem like a good idea, however this is one thing that diverts the readers attention and if you are trying to provide information to the user in order to gain click through sales this will give you a severe disadvantage. Never use pop up's in web design

think of a time you have been using a site reading the information it has and then a pop up flashes on to the screen and diverts your attention, it is very likely that you will want to leave the site. it can seem tempting when creating an online sales website however these advertisements do not work well and will quite often lose you sales rather than gaining them. Again this is another point that will divert your users attention from the point of your website. this may seem like an obvious statement, but you would be suprised how many people rush into this, or overlook it spending the extra time on other aspects of thier site. when people go on to your website because of the nature of search engines they generally have a good idea of what they are looking for, so if this happens to be on your site but your navigation is making it hard to find you could end up losing visitors and customers. Another good idea is to have well structured content, put yourself in the shoes of your target audience what information are they looking for on your site? and how is this categorised? Readability..

One very important point when it some comes to content is ensuring your informationis readable, contrasting colours such as black and white work best as they make it easy to read, using colours like red and purple make it very difficult to read the information you are presenting., also ensure your text is a good size with correct line spacing. Checking over your work when it is finished is crucial, reas over the information again and decide if it is readible. This is somthing to learn from in web design.

If your are making an important point you want to stand out dont go overboard on capital letters and exclamation marks. This is somthing to learn from in web design.

Ensure your navigation is on every page, and clear. You want to make everything as easy as possible for the end user, this is what they will expect and with your navigation if it is different from page to page and your users dont know where to look this will often throw them off. When you are linking to other pages or sites, underlining these in blue is generally good rule to play by, try to make your link relevant to your site and explain what they are for. This is somthing to learn from in web design.
