An internet connection costs money and while your typical home internet connection doesn't cost too much you can probably understand that a school or company with hundreds of computers connected to the internet needs a high end connection to cope with the internet usage.

Since these high end connections cost a lot of money, schools and companies try to limit the usage to absolutely necessary. They can do this by blocking access to websites that have nothing to do with work or school.

A proxy site can act as a middleman to enable you to access the blocked websites anyways. The internet connection at work or school sees you connecting to the proxy site instead of to the blocked website and allows you to open the site. The proxy site serves you the blocked site.

After some time the admin will probably notice the use of the proxy site and block access to it, but don't worry: just use a different proxy site, new ones are created each day.
