However, without being able to compare your statistics with your competitors you can't really know if you are performing well or poorly. That is where website ranking sites come into play. These sites use various methods to try to rank as many different sites on the web as possible for all kinds of different metrics.

Alexa.com is a popular website ranking site. It allows you to check a sites relative rank, pageviews, and 'Reach'. Alexa is preferred by a large number of SEO professionals but it is pretty universally agreed that there are some limitations to the service.Alexa gathers all of its data from a toolbar that users can install on their browsers. Since users know that alexa is tracking their movements and only their movements, many believe that the rankings can only be useful for comparing niche sites that are similar (pets.com vs. dogs.com)

Compete.com Metrics and Site Rankings
A new, younger competitor to Alexa
Compete.com is a slightly newer site than Alexa. They also rank websites but on several different metrics in 3 different categories : Visitors, Engagement, and Growth. Unlike Alexa they admit that they are drawing their data from approximately 2 million different users and website plugins.After doing some sample searches I found that the statistics for groups of similar sites track pretty closely with compete. This tracking will probably break up a bit as it draws more users.
