Website tips galore with plenty of simple, practical advice to help you avoid the more common mistakes as well as a plethora of resources that will help your website succeed.       

As much as I would love to designate myself as a "Webmaster", if truth be known I actually fall into the "WebMmaster" category.  (That would be a certified Web M. master with the middle initial that unfortunately stands for Moron!)  In other words, I'm just a bit on the "e"lliterate side of web mastery!

Yes, I have built a website, www.skincareresourcecenter.com .  (It's my first and I'm actually very proud of it.)

And you just have to meet my newest Cyber Baby: www.web-site-building-tips.com  It's a practical, easy yet fun approach to building your own ebusiness website so you can make a few extra bucks on the side :-)

Yes, I work on my website diligently and Yes, I could fill an encyclopedia with "What NOT to do" if one wants a successful website.

Over the past few years I have painfully learned to believe wholeheartedly in the adage "The more you know, the more you know you don't know".

I blunder, I bumble and frequently wish for a magic wand to save me from my inherent technological ineptitude.

So why not help each other?  What are your most helpful website tips?

Of course, I have to confess right up front that most of my website tips will be mostly in the "DON'T do this or you'll be sorry" category,  but I'm sure even those tips will save others from making the same mistakes that I have managed to make over the course of building my website.

Maybe all the experienced, gifted and seasoned "real" Webmasters will share their expertise and tips so we can all benefit by learning from each other.

Great idea, huh?  

Haven't you ever closed your eyes and sent a heartfelt prayer just before you pressed the enter key to make your web page go live?  I certainly have and more than I'd like to admit, I've suffered from a complete mental breakdown when I see the horror show I've managed to concoct.

I'm happy to share some of my more precious tips and, of course, the more painful pitfalls to avoid at all costs...

Pitfalls to avoid at all costs...

Privacy Policy: Be sure that your website has a privacy policy, especially if you are using Google Adsense. Google requires a privacy statement that includes a number of very specific issues to be clearly spelled out and posted on your website or you risk losing your adsense account.

Using Google images: If you read the fine print, in order to use Google images you have to contact the source for the image and request permission. If you don't get permission it is quite possible- (and unfortunately I speak from experience here) - that porn could be imbedded in the image which can hijack your website turning it into a catastrophic collection of male appendages resulting in a prolonged panic attack for the unsuspecting website owner.

Copying Images by Right Clicking: An absolute no-no! Who knew that this is an illegal activity? Not obeying this rule can have seriously dire consequences. Who knew that your entire computer system could crash in a heartbeat by snitching someone else's graphics, however innocently? It's a heart attack in the making, trust me on this one, don't do it!

Learn HTML basics BEFORE using it: Did you know that there are very specific rules about opening and closing HTML tags? For example, if you use a string of tags like < center> < b> < i> the HTML tags are closed in reverse order of opening like so: < / i> < / b> < / center> .
The ever mighty search engines like order! Random HTML tag closings from WebMmasters puts your website in the search engine trash heap! (Honest, been there, done that.)

Use ALT tags: I have to confess I'm still not really sure what these are but I do know that it is important to use them, and to use them correctly. For graphics and images, use alt="Describe your image here" at the end of the image URL.

Putting Google Adsense code in a table allows you to easily wrap text around them and to align the ads they way you want to on the web page.

Know Google's Adsense rules: Don't put more than three Google Adsense units on a web page! However, you are allowed to put three ad units, plus a search box and referrals on one page.

Google Ad units and images: Google has firmly stated recently that images cannot be aligned with Google Ads units for the purpose of encouraging clicking on ads. Images and Ad units must now be clearly defined and distinct from each other!

Develop a traffic building strategy early on: If no one can find your website it will be impossible to build up the traffic necessary to get visitors and to establish any ranking with the search engines. For instance, writing articles, press releases, and WikiHow's will give your site exposure and external links!

Research "Profitable" Keywords: Use Google's Adwords tool, it's free! Choose profitable keywords that have a high demand and low supply so that you will rank quickly with the search engines as well as earn more $$ per click!

It's also (almost) idiot proof too. Although for a technological illiterate like me, anything can and does happen!

This handy dandy little tool shows you the relative importance and visibility of a webpage, the ability of a page to rank in the SE, as well as provides data on site popularity and links. (Kind of makes your head hurt doesn't it?)

All in all, a helpful tool in learning how your site is doing on the search engines!

Search It is a great tool that I have found the most helpful for finding information quickly on all sorts of website questions I have. I use it on a daily basis in fact!

It quickly provides analysis on keywords, back links, indexed pages, researching profitable monetizing strategies, and a gazillion other specialized search functions.
Copyscape - Website Plagiarism Search
Search for copies of your content on the Web. Defend your site against plagiarism! Copyscape allows you to copy and paste any of your website pages in order to search for duplicated content. This is a great way to makes sure no one has snatched your original material!

Examples of the quickest and easiest ways to start generating income from your website.

Overture is a quick keyword search tool to help you find a variety of possible search terms for your website topic.
PRWeb
I like PRWeb for sending out press releases every 3 to 4 months. It gives you excellent exposure as well as a good external link.

This link exchange resource allows you to review the websites interested in linking to yours so that you can make the determination if the quality of the site will be of value, thus improving your site's ranking.

Checking and HTML Validation Service that Verifies Website Quality. It's important to make sure that you don't have any broken links- (the search engine spiders HATE that!)- and to ensure that your HTML is spider friendly.
Info Vilesilencer: The Original SEO Friendly Free Directory List
Info Vilesilencer: The Original SEO friendly free directory list. Although there is a rather scary graphic that welcomes you to this website, it also has 500 FREE directories that you can list your website with! No fees, no reciprocol links, just honest to goodness free listings. (Love that!) It takes a while to list with them all but in the long run it's worth it.
Free Directory Submitter!
How awesome is that? I just discovered this one and it's just too wonderful for words. This program pre-populates all the fields that you need to complete when registering your website with a directory so all you have to do is select the proper category! What a time saver this one is!
Article Submitter- FREE!
Available from the same company as the free directory submitter, Internet Marketing Wish List, the free article submitter takes the long, time consuming tediousness out of all the work involved when submitting your articles to all the different article directories.

The Article Submitter pre-populates all the typical fields and with a click of the mouse you are onto the next article directory! It's simply awesome!

U.S. Copyright Office
The U.S. Copyright Office is an office of public record for copyright registration and deposit of copyright material. Although your content is covered under the copyright laws as original material the minute your write it, it doesn't hurt to spend a few minutes copying and pasting the content of your website into a word document and sending it to the US Copyright Office along with $30. It's a small price to pay to know that your work is protected ~ with significantly powerful leverage should any of your work be hijacked !

Social bookmarking is a wonderful way to generate traffic and it just got w-a-y easier with this "all in one" little widget! It's a simple recognizable widget which will help your visitors save and promote your website or blog to which ever social bookmarking and feed reader service they choose.
Propeller ~ (Formerly NetScape)
Write a small news blurp on the new content or highlight some older content on your website, add the link to the page and Wah La! You've created an external link as well as generated some traffic!
Swicki Search
Eurekster Swicki is a community powered search and advertising for your blog or website. Swicki's are quick and easy to build and put on your website. They allow your visitors to search recommended websites for additional information on your content. What's great about the Swicki search function is that you can recommend the sites that are retrieved for the search terms! A nice automatic traffic generator because of course you would identify the pages on your own site to be displayed when keywords are searched! Pretty cool, huh?
NetAudioAds Pay-Per-Play
Beginning February 1, 2008 a new source for generating revenue for your website will launch with Pay-Per-Play (PPP) audio ads. With a little snippet of java code website owners around the world will get their visitor's attention with a 5 second ad that will play on any page the code is embedded on. Everytime an ad is played, revenue is generated! No clicks required like Google's PPC Adsense.

Craigs list is an online community ad site. It is a wonderful way to build links and advertise different pages on your site! Better yet, it's free.

How to Make Money on Your Website 

It's actually surprisingly easy for your website to generate money.

How much you ask?

Well, that depends on how much effort you want to put into capitalizing on all the various means available.

First of all, you really need to have your website well under way before you start to "monetize". (That means to begin the various strategies to start your website actually making money.) The rule of thumb is to have between 20 to 30 good, quality content filled pages up and optimized.

Then you're good to go!

The quickest and by far the easiest income producer is Google Adsense. All you do is sign up with Google then put the ads on your web pages.

Every time someone clicks on one of the ads you make money! It's a nice quick and easy way to get started on monetizing your site.

Then of course, there are simply hundreds of other ways to learn how to make money with a website which range from affiliate sales, offering to provide a service, selling absolutely anything, partnering with e-bay or Amazon.com, and on and on and on. You're only limited by your imagination!

It will be interesting to see how visitors react to an unexpected audio ad when they click on a web page no matter how short it is. The testing phase of these new ads has been reported as a huge success but time will tell.

It sure can't hurt to experiment a bit. Who knows, it could very well be the next generation of Pay Per Ads!
