Web Hosting for Beginners

The Internet is expanding like crazy and millions of people want their own web site or blog. First of all they might make do with a free hosting offer but sooner or later your ambitions grow beyond what free hosting accounts will allow.

Where to go? Who to believe ? And where can I put my lovely blog or web site...?

This Lens is about teaching you the early steps so that you don't waste money or get involved with a low quality web host ( like I did!) :-) Let's look at WHY you need a Web Host and then we go over what the heck a webhost is anyway...

What the Heck IS a Web Host Anyway?

Lots of people create their websites on their computers using software like NVU ( which is free) or Dreamweaver ( which is not). They keep working on it until it looks good. And then you want other people to see it.

You need to get that puppy into "cyberspace". You need to get it somewhere that other people can surf to and browse and they can't do that on your computer at home.

A web host is a set of well run computers owned and run by a webhosting company who rent out space on their hard drives for a few dollars a month.

And all that space on the webhosting hard drives is visible by anyone who surfs in and by the search engines too.

Getting your website or blog "online" is a big step and it can be quite confusing. I found it confusing and made some poor choices early on and the whole reson for this lens is to help out the beginner.

Now that you know what a web host is - you're going to ask " How do I find a good web host?"

We go into that next...:-)

Why You Need a Web Host

Some people are online for years without having a web host. You might create loads of Squidoo lenses, Blogger blogs and Wetpaint websites and earn some money too -so what's the big deal in having a web host?

In one word the answer is CONTROL!

If your article or review is on your web site on your domain name on your web host you can break free of the rules that every free host like Squidoo, Blogger and Wetpaint have to lay down for their customers to follow

If you want control over formatting, content, and other issues you get your self an account with a web hosting company.

And that brings us to the next question - Where to go, who do I trust with my web site or blog? Read on we go over those questions below

Best WebHost for a Newbie or Beginner

How do You Buy the Stuff You Buy?

How do you choose the best mp3 player, how do you choose what shoes to buy? Some people will buy what is in fashion others will ask a friend. More geeky people like me will do a whole bundle of research.

Before we go into what I found in my research I have to go over what you need to look at.

If I am going to buy a camera - I know what kind of lens I need and whether I lke simple menus ( I do, I do); if I am going to buy a washing machine - I just want it simple and reliable

OK?

So before I discuss with you where to go to get yourself a good webhost for a beginner we are briefly going to look at this list I made up to make things simple for you
