Website Promotion: It's not all that difficult!
It amazes me that there is actually a profession called Search Engine Optimizer. Is it actually that difficult to be seen on the internet that you need to hire a professional? But hold the phone for a minute - some businesses really DO need this service, especially if you're not too familiar with the internet.
So, just what it take to get noticed? And can I do this myself?
When looking for products and/or information on the web, the most common way is to use a search engine, and the commonly used is Google. But you should all know that by now - as so, I won't expand on that.
Do you get the results you are looking for when you use a search engine? So, if (I must presume you do) you get to a website that you can use, what terms (keywords) did you use? Did you have to enter a combination of terms? Would you presume that someone else may use the same terms?
There you have it - the secret of how to promote your website!
I remember back when I was involved with an online community called AdlandPro. This site is a waste of time if you were to ask me, but more about that later. Anyway, I remember getting a message from one of my friends there that he saw my website on Google, page 3. At this time, I hadn't done anything to merit such an honor. But there I was, for my searchEstate website of which I had used my domain redirect of steveshearer.com for.
searchEstate was a good way to promote yourself back then (what - it was only 4 years ago) and is still a good way today, even if you use their free services. And now comes squidoo - hope this is all I understand it to be and I'm not wasting my time here!?
Now that you know the "SECRET" (the basics), we need to move along into the how - and there's plenty of gurus and scammers who will gladly take your money to sell you what I am writing here (or their interpretation of).
First and foremost is your title tag. This should have a clear and concise description of the page that you are displaying. So often, people use Home for their landing page - that ain't gonna get you anywhere with Google! Use a keyword phrase that you think others are likely to use. But don't depend on just one or two words and don't pack your title with obvious repetition. And being that many people now use the internet instead of the yellow pages, a location specific website should also have their city and state in this tag.
Now, the wordage you use in your title, should show up on the page and it's best if those words are used in Heading tags (view the source code of most any website). But don't stress, at least get those words somewhere in your copy.
Next is to get Google to know you're there. You can wait until your pages are automatically indexed by Google or you can insert the code that the Googlebots look for.
There's a few other things to help your site get top Google search ratings (1st page) - see my list of links below. But for now, I have given you the simplest way to promote your website without it being a timely or a costly matter.
No, I don't claim to be an SEO expert, I just design websites that are optimized for search engines. I can make one for you also, if you like.

If you have a business and only use your website to attract new customers, your business takes most of your time and you don't really have time to go looking for all the SEO information you need: then you can get help but if your website is your main business, then you should take the time to look for info that is free.
