What is a Website?

A web site consists of several webpages. These are documents created with HTML (Hypertext Markup Language) that is part of a group of hypertext documents or resources available on the World Wide Web.

What is a Hyperlink (link)?

A link is an area on a web page that will, at the click of a mouse, lead to another web page. Textual links are normally underlined. Images may also be links. This is how one navigates throughout a website.

What is a Site Map?

A site map is an index of all the pages that are on your website. Usually this is a seperate webpage devoted to supplying this information with links to each page of the website.

What are Frames?

An HTML technique allowing Web site designers to display two or more pages in the same browser window.
What is eCommerce?

Electronic commerce (also known as ebusiness.). Buying and selling products and services via the Internet.

What is JavaScript?

Javascript is a programming language used mainly for adding logic and dynamic capabilities to HTML code.

What is a Metatag?

In HTML or XML, a tag used in the header of a page to provide information about the page. There may be multiple meta tags in a header, each with different information. In current usage, each tag includes the name of the information and the content that supports that name. Other commonly used meta tag names are description, keywords, date, and copyright.

What are Keywords?

Keywords are words or brief phrases given a directory or search engine in order to retrieve links to related web sites. Because search engines create their indexes based on the occurrences of such phrases, proper keyword selection and placement is vital to SEO.

What is Search Engine Optimization (SEO)?

SEO refers to techniques for attracting preferred visitors to a web site through major search engines. Current SEO is more about easily decipherable code and copy and about links from high-ranking, relevant web sites than it is about "search engine submission".

What is a Domain Name?

The domain name is the unique name that identifies an Internet site. The Internet is made up of hundreds of thousands of computers and networks, all with their own domain name or unique address. Domain names always have two or more parts separated by dots such as compustyle.net.

What does URL mean?

URL stands for Uniform Resource Locator. It is the standard way to give the address of any resource on the Internet, most commonly on the world wide web. An example of this is http://www.compustyle.net/about.html. - http is the protocol, www.compustyle.net is the machine name, and about.html is the document.

What is an IP Address?

An IP address is an Internet Protocol Number which a unique number which consists of four parts separated by dots - for example: 207.107.98.104. Every machine on the Internet has a unique IP number. These numbers are converted to a domain name which is essentially a nickname for the address such as "compustyle.net". This is to make it easier for users to remember.

What is a Domain Name Server (DNS?

A DNS is a computer program (machine) on the Internet that translates domain names to IP address numbers to form the internet address for network hosts. Domain Name Service is a protocol that is part of the Internet Protocol Suite, and uses UDP. Another mechanism used to resolve Internet addresses is a Hosts file.

Is my Domain Name registration confidential?

No, it is public information. WHO IS databases contain nameserver, registrar, and usually full contact information about each domain name. Each registrar must maintain a WHOIS database for all of the domains they host. The registrar is the "domain name host", not to be confused with "web host". InterNIC maintains a central registry of WHOIS databases. This data base only contains registrar and nameserver information for all .com, .net, and .org domains.

What is a web host?

A Web host provides server space for websites that are operated by companies who do not own their own web servers. This "space" is the area that a website is alloted on the internet.

What is a web server?

A web server is a computer that delivers (serves) webpages. When you enter a website address (URL) into a browser program this will send a request to the server for that domain. The server will retrieve the webpage and deliver it to your browser for your viewing.

What is Bandwidth?

The range of frequencies a transmission line or channel can carry: the higher the frequency the higher the bandwidth and the greater the information carrying capacity of a channel. Bandwidth is most accurately expressed in cycles per second, or hertz (Hz), which measures the amount of information that can flow through a channel. But, it's also common to use bits or bytes per second instead.

What is "Unlimited Data Transfer"?

Many webhosting companies limit the amount of data that can be transferred from your site each month - the amount of bandwidth that can be used. If you exceed this amount you will have to pay additional charges.
