Remarkably, there are still companies selling "web site submission" services. Even more remarkably, there are still companies that pay for this service. This lens explores way to get your site listed in the major search engines WITHOUT directly submitting to them, which is much more effective.

"Should you submit your web site to Google?

NO, NO, NO!"

How to get your site indexed

Manually submitting your site to Google places your site at the bottom of a very tall stack of sites for Google to check out. A much better and quicker approach is to let Google (or any search engine) to find your site on its own.

Here are some strategies for making that happen:

  1. Get a popular blog to link to your site. It helps here to have a very good reason for someone to link to you. Create some kind of very interesting content and then email some bloggers in your industry about it. Someone will link to you.

  2. Submit an article to an article directory. This is a slower method than above because it will probably take Google longer to find the link. Submitting to multiple directories will speed the process up.

  3. Submit an XML sitemap file. This is a text file (in XML format) that describes the entire structure of your site. This should be done periodically regardless, assuming the content on your site changes or grows.

  4. Create a Blogger blog with a link to your site. Google owns Blogger, so chances are excellent that it will find your blog if you use the Blogger platform.

  5. Add link bait to your site. Link bait is any interesting content or functionality that other web sites want to link to. If lots of sites link to your site, the search engines will easily find and index your site.

One final note: make sure it is easy to navigate your site. Text links work the best. You want a search engine to easily be able to crawl around your site and index your pages.
