1. Search Engines LOVE new content. If your site content doesn't change often, your site needs a blog because search spiders like fresh text. Blog as frequently as possible, every two weeks is not bad, every week is good, two or three times a week is excellent. In fact, they love fresh content so much that your website will actually be spidered faster based on the rate at which you add content to your site. If those little crawlers find no new content, they will come back less frequently. If they find new links to your site, they may come back more frequently but quite by accident. (Always remember good quality content and freshness add relevancy to your site in the eyes of the search engines.)

2. If content is king, then links are queen. Build a network of quality backlinks using your keyword phrase as the link. Be sure to use your keyword phrases rather than single keywords, and put your location in your text ("our motor spare part store" not "our store") to help you get found in local searches.

3. Search engines like hierarchy structure in page content. This means that a page should have a title, a paragraph of text and a sub-header that represents the paragraph. Headings and paragraphs should be placed in their respective tags. A heading tag is defined by the "H" tag. This could be H1, H2 up to H6 with H1 being the most important. That doesn't mean that every heading should be in the "H1" tags because search engines like to see hierarchy. This will make a more readable and user friendly page, which search engines will reward with a higher rank.

4. Understand social marketing. It is part of SEO. The more you understand about sites like Digg, Propeller, Yelp, StumbleUpon, del.icio.us, Facebook, etc., the better you will be able to compete in search.
