Wedding Cake Toppers

Before we talk about wedding cake toppers, let's discuss the foundation for the topper - the wedding cake. For many decades, wedding cake has been served to guests at the reception.

Millions of brides agonize over what type of cake to order, how many tiers, fondant or marzipan, and so much more. What's more, there are millions of fathers of the bride who have shelled out millions of dollars for wedding cakes - the average formal wedding cake in North America costs $535. In most cases, the wedding cake is large with several tiers - multiple layers with lots of frothy icing, embellishments and decorations.

Finally, the crowning glory on any cake is the wedding cake topper. It is common for certain parts of a tier cake to be fake, and other layers to be edible. This is often the case when a strong support is needed or a bride wishes a massive cake but is only having 100 guests to the wedding reception. It is often tradition that the bride and groom cut the cake at a cake cutting ceremony, and feed each other the first piece of the cake. The rest of the cake is then cut into pieces to be served to guests.

Most brides choose to save and freeze a portion of their beloved wedding cake, and perhaps taken out to enjoy on the first wedding anniversary or at the christening of the first-born child. The wedding cake, and thus the wedding cake topper, is important parts of the wedding day.

The Evolution of Wedding Cake Toppers

Wedding cake toppers are little statues that sit atop a wedding cake and are supposed to represent the bride and groom. This custom became very popular in the 1950s across North America and was meant to signify togetherness wedding in the 1950s where it represented togetherness. Of course, the most common is the formal couple; bride in white and groom in black tuxedo and tails. Nowadays, wedding cake toppers come in hundreds of different varieties, themes and ethnicities. Wedding toppers today more commonly represent a shared interest, hobby or love of the marrying couple.

There are many urban legends and myths about how the wedding cake topper came to be. All are more or less believable and some could be valid. Our favorite is the following version:

This story of the origin of the wedding cake topper has been passed down from generation to generation, and changes a little depending upon who is telling the story. Once upon a time, long ago in 1901, a baker's daughter was planning her wedding. She was searching for the perfect symbol to represent what she felt would represent her marriage. Together with her father, this young bride spent many hours looking for the perfect symbol of their marital bliss and their future together. It was important that the symbol be unique and has significance. The bride had all but given up when, just one day before the wedding ceremony, her father (the baker) stumbled upon the perfect idea. With much pride and glee, he told his daughter he had solved the problem, but that he would like to surprise her with his special gift on her wedding day. Following the wedding ceremony, the newly wed couple entered thee reception hall and were greeted with the most magnificent tiered white wedding cake. Atop the cake, rising high above the crowd was a miniature couple that resembled the daughter and her groom, dressed in wedding attire that matched their own! The baker explained to his daughter and son-in-law that the cake topper represented the sweetness that would always be part of their lives as husband and wife.

Traditionally, the ordinary cake topper shows a bride and groom holding hands or standing side by side, looking formal and somewhat serious looking; often it was made of plastic. Today, cake toppers are so beautifully designed and created from a multitude of materials from ceramic and glass to porcelain, crystal and silver. Oftentimes they are figural or sculptural in design, ranging from entwined hearts, kissing doves, ornate flowers or even photo frames with a picture of the bride and groom. If you have chosen a specific wedding theme, such as Asian, Butterflies, Calla Lilies, Autumn Splendor, Winter Wonder, Vintage Western or simply a color theme such as black and white, red and silver, orange, green or whatever you chose%u2026 you can easily find a matching wedding cake topper. For a seaside allure wedding, choose a beach themed cake topper such as a starfish. Cake toppers give you a chance to break from the norm and be different - truly express to your guests the couple you are! If you really want a traditional tiered wedding cake you can always add a bit of uniqueness or fancy with your choice of wedding cake toppers.
