A wedding lei will bring the tropics to your day
A wedding lei usually consists of fragrant tropical flowers of various colors, but can also be woven from leaves or made with kukui nuts. They are woven together to form a ring and can be worn around the neck or on the head. They are traditional in Hawaiian and Polynesian culture and are often seen in tropical weddings.
If you are having a tropical wedding, either at home or with a destination wedding, consider adding to your ceremony with a beautiful wedding lei.

The history of the Hawaiian Lei
Category: File - :Lei pikake.jpg|thumb|right|200px|Fragrant lei of fresh pikake (Arabian jasmine).
Lei is a Hawaiian word for a garland or wreath. More loosely defined, a lei is any series of objects strung together with the intent to be worn. The most popular concept of a lei in Hawaiian culture is a wreath of flowers draped around the neck presented upon arriving or leaving as a symbol of affection. This concept was popularized through tourism between the Hawaiian Islands and the continental United States in the 19th and 20th centuries.
Children and sweethearts are poetically referred to as "lei" and many ancient and modern songs and chants refer to this imagery.
A wedding lei introduction
Flowers, nuts, seeds, leaves and shells... oh my!
KUI
A piercing stitch is used. This is what is thought of usually and is used with common flowers such as plumeria, roses, and carnations. The flowers are pierced with thread and sewn together.
HAKU
This is a three-ply braid method. Softened tree bark or long leaves are braided together and foliage and flowers that have long stems are braided in with it.
HILI
This method uses only one material, usually a vine or fern, and braids them together.
HILO
The materials are twisted, double helix, and intertwined. Two strands are twisted together to form a rope. The most common is the Ti leaf.
Any of these can be closed or open. It is not uncommon to see an open lei that merely rests on the shoulders and hangs down each side.

Popular Lei making materials
Ti leaf and maile leaf are beautiful on their own or woven with flowers.
Kukui nut leis are, not only beautiful, but last well, too. They can offer a unique lei experience.
Shells can make for an everlasting lei. Some of the most popular are the shells from the hawaiian island of Ni'hau. This island is authentically Hawaiian and the leis are very sought after.

Lei giving
A wonderful way to show your love at your wedding is to exchange leis. The bridal couple can do this with each other or you can even have one given to each of the parents to signify two families being united. It is a wonderful and caring gesture.
