Introduction to Wedding Photography
One of the things that you absolutely must remember when you are getting into wedding photography is that you need to be prepared for everything that might happen. There are lots of things that can go wrong, but no matter what happens you are only going to get one chance to capture the pictures of the bride and groom, their friends and family. The pictures that you are going to take of them are going to last for years and years so you need to make sure that you have your camera, a backup camera in case something goes wrong with the first one, batteries and backup batteries, film (if you need it), extra film, memory cards for any digital cameras, extra memory cards for when you need it, bags and containers to carry all of your things, and (hopefully) some kind of assistant to help you.
A lot of people are concerned about what kind of camera they should use when they are taking wedding photographs for the first time. If you are using a digital camera, you are going to want at least an 8 mega pixel Digital SLR. If you are using a film camera you are going to want at least 35mm film. The idea with your choice of camera selection should be to have a camera that you can produce A1 prints from - if you have not produced A1 prints from your camera / cameras before you should do it in advance so that you know that you can get the right level of picture quality.
You will also want to have a number of add-on lenses for your cameras so that you can zoom in on your subject matter and take a wide variety of shots. You are going to have limited time when you arrive at the wedding - guests are not going to want to spend all of their time posing for photos - they will want to get the shot done and then go about their business. This is going to have a big impact on the way that you shoot the photos. You will have to be prepared well in advance; it helps if you are able to be present with the bride, groom and the major guests at the time of their trial run so that you can get to know the place, the wedding schedule, and exactly where and how you will take the photos.
The trial run will let you get a lot of the technical issues that may come up out of the way. If you forget something on the day of the trial run it is no big deal, that is what the trial run is for and it will help you to remember what you need for the big day when it counts. You will also learn a lot of things on the trial day such as the routes to get to the wedding chapel and the reception afterwards, where the best places are at either location to take your shots, whether you are going to want to take along a ladder / step-stool to get the best short (tip: yes, you are going to want a ladder / step-stool) and so on.
On the actual day you need to show up fully prepared with all of your equipment. You have to be on time to the event (this is critical, as the bride and groom will be completely wrapped up in their own issues and they will not be able to worry about the photographer at this point - they will be totally counting on you to help them). You will also have to have a professional attitude when dealing with the guests and family, and you will have to have a smiling and happy demeanor no matter how you might actually be feeling at the moment. You need to make the people comfortable so that you can get the photo which they are going to look at over the future years and decades.
If you succeed in taking great wedding photos (and you should take a lot just to make sure that you get the best results) then you will probably be called to put them on DVD or in some kind of album format. Focus on making sure that you get the right materials to begin with and you will have great photos to work from to give your clients exactly what they are looking for!
