Marriage Help

Many people are unsure what makes a good marriage and what tools are available to them. These are some of the questions I hear on a pretty regular basis from engaged couples:How do I know if we need to see a marriage counselor before we get married?

The answer to this question is very simple. Everyone, regardless of race, religion, nationality, age or sex, should see a marriage counselor prior to marriage. Marriage counseling is a good way to check your compatibility (some counselors even have you take a compatibility quiz and then you compare and talk about your answers). In addition to checking compatibility, they help you address some of the underlying issues in your relationship, helping you to bring them to the forefront and encouraging the good communication skills that will help you work together to compromise and resolve the issues.

Once we get married, what are the signs that I should look for that my marriage may be in trouble?

One or the other of you withdrawing from the relationship. Staying late at work, no longer caring for themselves, not wanting to talk, no interest in sex, depression, anxiety, general apathy. Don't get me wrong, everyone has these issues come up occasionally, but when they begin to become the norm, it is time to seek out some form of marriage therapy.

My suggestion to you is to go and seek out marriage help anyway. Let the counselor know that I want to save my marriage, but my spouse/ fiancée won't come. They may be able to help you try and find a way to encourage them to come in. They will also be able to help you, and perhaps if your spouse or soon to be spouse sees that you are serious about working out the relationship, they may reconsider and join you, even if it is just to be able to tell their side of the story.

No matter what, just remember marriage is hard work and problems are inevitable, but how you deal with them can make or break your relationship, so choose wisely.
