Deciding on Your Wedding Color Combinations

Choosing your wedding color combinations is one of the first decisions you should make because you will then know what direction to go in when decorating the ceremony and reception hall. You will want to incorporate that color theme in your wedding decor- invitations, favors, party gifts, floral arrangements at the ceremony and reception, bridal party attendants, bouquets and possibly a splash on your wedding dress.

Wedding color combinations is all about you exploring other coordinating color schemes rather than just the traditional colors. Use the popular colors seen at many weddings but explore mixing those colors with others to create your own individual palette. Your goal is to get away from the over-used boring wedding colors and give your wedding a fresh upbeat look.

Planning a wedding in the spring or summer and need some inspiration with coordinating your wedding color combinations? New sections have been added to expand your possibilities. Create your own spring or summer wedding color palette by pulling colors from several different categories.

Brides-to-be planning a fall, winter or holiday wedding can also check out our expanded sections on great colors to mix and match for your wedding color combinations.

Keep your favorite wedding color combinations in a binder or wedding planner for easy reference as you go shopping both online and in bridal shops and stores.

Where to Start for Wedding Color Inspiration

A quick stop at your local hardware store to get paint chips is a great place to start. Use the paint strips and paint chips to mix and match color combinations to see what colors coordinate the best.

As an example, lets say you are planning a fall wedding. Using the fall foliage palette the following colors come to mind- orange, red, yellow, green and brown. How can you coordinate two or three of these colors to come up with your unique wedding color combination? The colors that you select will add a level of sophistication or simplicity to your wedding day.

The Meaning of Colors

Aqua- is a favorite for beach or tropical weddings and looks great when paired with shades of browns or pinks.

Black- is sophisticated and assertive and can offer a very clean graphic look when paired with white. Black as an accent color looks great with pinks, blues, yellows, greens and many other colors. Black can also be worn as an accent color on the bride or bridesmaids dresses.

Brown- the shades of brown are showing up in many weddings and looks great when paired with pink, aqua, purple, coral or mint green.

Champagne- is a more conservative, traditional color that has a vintage feel.

Coral- is found in many Latino, East Indian or Caribbean weddings. This color coordinates well with teal, rust, brown, pink or yellow.

Gray- is a modern, retro and sleek. This color has taken the lead over champagne as a very hot neutral color and looks great when paired with a wheat or heather color.

Green- has become an environmentally friendly color for the eco-conscious bride. Shades of green or lime green paired with pink or rose are sought after combinations.

Ivory- this color is considered elegant yet soft spoken and mixes great with most colors. Use pastel or rich deep colors as an accent on your gown or with table settings.

Navy- is a classic color and looks great when paired with mint green, dusty orange, cream, gray or white.

Pink- the lighter shades of pink are a happy color that is very versatile when paired as an accent color or main color paired with other pastels or vibrant colors.

Purple- is a strong color that has been associated with royalty. In modern times, it has taken a more glamorous look and works well when paired with grays, charcoals or black.

Red- is a very passionate romantic color that can be used all year long but is extremely popular for Valentine weddings.

Royal Blue- is more traditional and pairs well with yellow, blue and gold.

Yellow- is a very cheery color that brings happiness, makes people smile and brings about optimism and closeness. Shades of yellow look great with white, pastels and many primary and vibrant colors.

Summer Wedding Color Combinations

One of the most popular times of the year to get married is during the summer months. You can choose to have your wedding ceremony and reception inside or outside in a garden setting or at the beach during daylight or early evening hours.

You can choose your summer wedding colors around a wide variety of nature's bold colors found in blooms and foliage and use pastel colors as background accents. Some summer wedding colors to consider include pastel pink, light blue, yellow or lavender to red paired with hot pink or orange. Maybe you prefer to use the calming color of light green that can paired with a darker green, pink or lime green.

If you are having a beach or tropical island destination wedding then incorporate the colors of the surroundings in your flowers, invitations, favors, bridesmaids dresses and reception table decor. Your summer wedding colors can reflect the colors of the greenery, water, sand, plants and flowers.

Can't decide which colors to use for your summer wedding and reception? Browse through the two or three color combinations to get some ideas. Add to the list with one of your favorite colors. Make your selection of colors from the summer wedding combinations and then include them in your flowers, bouquets, bridesmaids dresses, initiations and reception tables. Include popular summer themes such as sunflowers, beach themes, sailboats and sea shells.

Fall Wedding Color Combinations

The colors gold and ivory incorporated into your fall wedding colors gives an elegant, classic look. The color gold creates the warmth of orange in a more subdued way. Since the ivory color is neutral, it plays off the rich color of gold.

Choosing deep jewel tones such as purple, dark green, sapphire blue, burgundy or ruby look great when mixed with gold, cream or silver. The gold, cream or silver accent color will play off and make the deep rich colors standout.

You can also try a deep brown paired with a pale or neutral blue. The warmth of the brown color when paired with the coolness of the blue creates a very striking palette.

Many color combinations can work well for your fall wedding. Most colors can be paired with an accent shade to bring out that fall color scheme. For example, if pink is your main color try pairing it with gold, brown, dark green or other fall colors. If a shade of yellow is your main color, try pairing it with one of the jewel tone colors.

Best Fall Flowers- Mums, roses, dahlias, daisies, hydrangeas, gardenia, calla, fall leaves, dried berries, natural and dried wheat.

Best Bridal Dress Colors- An off white or cream dress with gold or other fall color accent

I thin red and gold would be a good combo for a regal feel but not too much gold or you'll get a gawdy feel...blegh!
