Be An Effective Wedding Emcee - A novice's guide, Part 1

A good friend asks you to emcee her wedding. You accept. It's an impulse decision you don't want to regret. You realise you have no idea what to do. But, still, you want to be an effective emcee and not let them down. You said yes, and now it's up to you to make sure you are on track.

This is exactly what happened to a friend of mine. I got a phone call from her a week later, asking if I knew what she was supposed to do. I had no idea either. I suggested a Google search, since it's a fast and easy way to find information. She replied she had no idea what words to put into the search engine, so I volunteered to do the search for her. I now share that information with you.

There are a lot of websites with tips on how to be an effective emcee. Some are more detailed than others. It's harder to find a step by step guide, though. This article is in two parts, and I will cover, in short form, the steps you will need to take. This first part covers before the wedding.

It's your job as emcee to make certain the reception goes without a hitch, keeping the pace moving. To do this you have to be prepared. Procrastinating on this will prove fatal. If you only take one thing from this artice, let it be this. Don't procrastinate. Be prepared.

1. A month before the wedding meet with the bride and groom. Ask them all the things you need to know about the reception. Here are some suggestions of things you may need to know. - How they got together, - Any amusing stories they want to tell; - Who will be doing speeches? - Will they be having telegrams and messages? - Are there any special events they wish to have at the reception. (maybe a tribute for a parent that has passed away, as an example). - Are there any subjects you should avoid (such as sore topics sure to cause clashes with guests.) - The names of everyone in the wedding party.

2. From the information you have write up the order of ceremony for the reception, including any speeches you need to write. Keep the speeches short, less than five minutes is ideal. You don't want to bore your audience. Remember it's not your day, it's theirs.

3. Get out some cue cards and write the whole thing down. Make it a blow-by-blow description if you have to. Then, make a checklist so you don't miss anything. These two tools will keep you on track.

4. Rehearse, rehearse, rehearse!

Now you are on your way to being an effective emcee for your friend's wedding reception. In part 2 of this article I will list a general order of ceremony for the reception to get you on your way.
