W Edwards Deming is thought of as one of the original sources on quality. His last book - The New Economics - is mostly about knowledge and a system of profound knowledge. This has been described itself as a lens. It includes an awareness of systems, psychology of human relations, a theory of variation, and a theory of knowledge.

Deming came to public attention in post-war Japan and was still working in the '90s. His ideas changed but are not a fad.

A problem in understanding the theory of knowledge is that it seems to be based on American pragmatism although his ideas on management style have hardly ever been tried in the USA. They do seem to work in Japan and Asia where the theory of knowledge could be different.

Quality Circles report for OhmyNews
I wrote this report based on web information about a Quality Control Circles conference in South Korea. My observation is that Quality Circles have continued in Asia, but not in the UK or USA as far as I know. Feedback please.

Have Deming ideas actually been tried yet in the USA?

It is known that Deming was listened to in Japan in the 1950s.

Apparently he was listened to by Ford and others in the USA in the 1980s. Did they actually understand what he was saying?
