Wedgwood Jasper Ware

Ranked #7,441 in Hobbies, Games & Toys, #92,466 overall

You have seen it, now learn what it is.

Someone in your family has a covered box or pin tray that looks like it is made of clay, but it is not shiny like regular china. This is probably jasper ware, a clay body that comes in 12 or 14 colors and is decorated with laurel swags, ivy vines, naked babies and strange figures going to a toga party. Or they are sitting around playing crazy harps, or some other inexplicable activity. Welcome to the world of Greek mythology. The naked babies are putti, and the adults are characters out of myths or examples of Ancient Greek life. The Greek costumes they wear, or half-wear, identify Wedgwood jasper ware as surely as the makers mark on the bottom of the item.

Why should you care? Well, Wedgwood has been making these vases, covered boxes, pin trays, ornaments and plaques for over two hundred years, and are still selling them. The larger pieces hold their value well. Maybe if you show some interest, these easily identifiable porcelain collectibles will come your way. Then, you can either learn about the manufacturer and mythology, and enjoy your inheritance, or you can convert these items into money by selling them.

The Wedgwood Jasper Ware Colors

Wedgwood jasper ware is most commonly found in a medium blue, but a medium green is also popular. Less often seen are: dark blue, dark green, teal, lilac, yellow, black, chocolate, pink, gray, terra cotta and others. Sometimes the base form is made in white/cream porcelain, with a shine glaze, and the decoration is in one of the colors listed. There are also a few cases of white on white or color on color items.

Do You Check For Manufacturers Marks In Stores?

Or in other people's homes?

I am afraid I do. I know some people consider this rude, but I only look on items I like. So I can say, "Oh, I like this. Who makes it?" and see if I can find my own. I also like things because I like them, not because of the mark. I'm just seeing if there is a new firm around I need to look for.

So, do you check the bottoms of things?
