Research: Weight control and green tea

A recent green tea study was conducted in China. It was conducted at Fudan University, Shanghai and funded by the (British) Lipton Institute of Tea.

The 90-day trial supported existing evidence that green tea may indeed help improve body composition in Asian populations.

The research monitored 182 moderately overweight Chinese subjects, between the ages of 18 and 55. The effects of green tea consumption on body weight, body fat mass, as well as the distribution of fat was measured.

The study clearly indicated that regular consumption of green tea was helpfull in promoting weight loss and improve body composition in moderately overweight individuals.

Green tea alone won't cut it

... you will need some movement as well in order to lose weight

Wouldn't it be nice if there was some sort of magic pill - for instance a green tea capsule - that you could take, and the weight would come off just like magic? You know - no work involved at all?

Unfortunately, that is not how things work. Although there are many good reasons to enjoy a healthy cup or two of tea, weight loss involves some exercise in addition to drinking tea! What a green tea supplement does, is that it helps you on the way to weight control when you begin to move your body.

The good news is that you really don't need to spend countless hours at the gym to have a significant fitness effect. A little doze of strength/resistance training - as little as 7 minutes, three times per week (!) - plus some cardio (like walking, running or biking)... That is basically all it takes :-)

You can read more about the real easy fitness at my lens here. Adding green tea and enough fiber to a proven work-out routine is the way to go. Easy as pie!

Research on weight loss and green tea

In American Journal of Clinical Nutrition, January 2005 (vol. 81: 122-129) T. Nagao reports about his findings: How extracts from green tea resulted in an increase - a significant one - in a measure of metabolism called 'energy expenditure'. The extracts also had a significant effect on oxidation of fat.

It was originally theorized that some of the effects were to be due to the content of caffeine in green tea.

However, researchers actually discovered that green tea had properties that went beyond those that could be used to explain the caffeine effect.

Green, green ... ehhh, grass

What if the taste of green tea is stopping you?

Did you know there is another healthy tea variety called oolong (also called wulong, wu long or wu yi) tea. This is considered a much more tasty variety.

And the best thing is - it has almost the same amount of health benefits as the more "grassy" tasting green tea variety.

Want to know more about it? If so, hop right over to buy oolong tea - mmm.., tasty!

Green tea - perfect for more than weight loss

There are other major health benefits as well

The American Journal of Clinical Nutrition released a study called "Green tea consumption and cognitive function: a cross-sectional study from the Tsurugaya Project" in February, 2006.

The study was by a group of scientists from Tohoku University Graduate School of Medicine, Sendai in Japan.

The objective of the study was, as the report reads, "to examine the association between green tea consumption and cognitive function in humans".

The subjects included in the study were 1003 Japanese people aged 70 years or older. The study concluded that a higher green tea consumption was associated with a lower prevalence of cognitive impairment in humans.

In other words - it's good for your brain and thought processes, so why wait untill you're getting older?

It's tea or (no tea) time!

More research on the effects of green tea

Recently, researchers from University of Purdue concluded that a compound in green tea inhibits the growth of cancer cells.

In 1994, the results of an epidemiological study was published by the 'Journal of the National Cancer Institute'. The study indicated that drinking green tea reduced the risk of esophageal cancer (esophagus is the gullet) in Chinese men and women by a significant amount - or nearly sixty percent.

Furthermore, there is also research which indicates that drinking green tea lowers the total level of cholesterol.
