Florida Hospital - Weight Loss Surgery Program
Bariatric weight loss surgery is the only proven consistently effective treatment for morbid obesity. Many studies have shown that dieting and exercise have limited effective relief once a person becomes morbidly obese.
Facts show only 1 percent or less of morbidly obese adults are able to drop even moderate amounts of body weight and keep the weight off for even a year. It is hard to lose weight and keep it off and it is even harder when you health worsens because of your weight.
In contrast, weight loss surgeries: gastric bypass and lap band procedures, result in maintenance of average excess body weight loss of 40%- 60% at five years.
Bariatric surgery saves lives. A recent study comparing large populations of morbidly obese patients who underwent gastric bypass surgery to morbidly obese patients who did not undergo weight loss surgery showed an eighty-nine percent reduction in mortality risk in the patients who underwent the gastric bypass surgery. The patients who did not undergo bariatric surgery had a ten-fold higher mortality rate at five years compared to the surgery group. The risk of undergoing bariatric surgery is simply far less than the risk of remaining morbidly obese.
