Isn't it amazing how we humans are always looking for quick fixes, especially when it comes to weight loss? Yet, crash diets and rapid weight loss do not constitute success - they're not a healthy option!

Here we provide some straight forward guidelines which are easy to follow and should ultimately become part of your lifestyle.

Taking a closer look at Weight Loss 101

  • Make a commitment and get your doctor involved
    Make an appointment to discuss:

    o any medical conditions that could affect your diet, any nutritional requirements or possible limitations regarding exercise, such as diabetes, arthritis, MS, etc
    o your ideal or realistic weight

  • Using a food diary
    Keeping a food diary makes good sense. It helps you to understand why you eat as you do. The toughest part in keeping a diary is to be honest.

    o Write down how much you're eating, eg cup of rice or a cereal bowl of popcorn
    o Write down how you are feeling eg depressed, happy, positive - this will often reflect why your eating pattern was different on any specific day
    o Make a note of any exercise you've done - how you felt about it.

    The diary will help you keep track and help you avoid future pitfalls.

  • Setting realistic goals
    Be realistic about your goal weight.

    o Set yourself short-term goals eg to lose 5 lbs over a 4-6 week period.
    o Weigh yourself once a week at the most and around the same time of day

  • Green with envy?
    "I gain weight merely looking at food". Sound familiar? Isn't it amazing how some people appear to be able to eat anything and not gain an ounce?
    Our bodies deal with food intake quite uniquely. Factors that influence one's weight include metabolism, our eating habits and our level of activity. If you take in more than you can burn off, you will gain weight.

    There are however some situations, such as certain medical conditions and medications, over which you and I have little or no control.

  • Metabolism
    Metabolism is defined as the rate at which your body burns up calories or uses energy. Even resting burns up some calories. This is known as the basal metabolic rate.

    But how does metabolism affect my weight? In short, the person with a high metabolic rate burns off calories more efficiently than the one with a low metabolic rate. Muscle burns up calories more effectively than fat. So the more muscle in relation to fatty tissue you have, the better your metabolism.   • What are calories?

  • Stick with the program
    The best part is achieving the goals. It may be slow, but stick with it.
    o Reward yourself, but not with food!
    o Keep track of your progress
