Dog Food Recall: What Happened?

Have you thought at all about what you have been feeding your dog? Do you know what the ingredients are, or even what they mean? If you don't, then you take the time to read this, after all, it is the least you can do for them!

Dog Food Recall-March 2007

In March 2007 Menu Foods recalled over 150 brands of dog food because of melamine contamination.

Melamine is used as a binding agent, also in plastics such as plastic cooking utensils, it is used also as fertilizer. It is not labeled for use in animal or human foods.

Melamine when combined with cyanuric acid (or melamine-related products) cause crystals to form in urine and kidneys. The animals that died from these products, died from kidney failure.

How Did The Melamine Make It Into The Food?

The melamine made it into the food, because it was in wheat-gluten and rice-gluten that was used in these products.

The glutens were from China. Specifically 2 companies in China that have since been prosecuted. These companies used the melamine in their formulas as a filler to increase the protein amount in the foods.

The glutens were then shipped to the U.S. and used by Menu Foods as an ingredient in their pet foods.

Would You Feed Poo To Your Baby?

That is what is in a good majority of the dog foods on the shelves these days. Along with other ingredients such as dead, diseased dogs, fecal matter, and road kill.

It was found that Los Angeles sends euthanized dogs and cats to a pet food plant every month. The medication used to euthanize these animals is not broken down in the manufacturing process and is still found in your dogs food!

So if you are still feeding your dog popular brands off the shelves at the grocery store, chances are you are feeding the above to her.

Wellness Dog Food!

Wellness Dog Food uses real, fit for human consumption, USDA approved, naturally preserved ingredients in their food. This means you will find ingredients such as;

deboned chicken
chicken meal (freeze-dried and ground chicken)
oatmeal
ground barley
ground brown rice
carrots
spinach
sweet potatoes
apples
blueberries

Now doesn't this sound like something we could eat?!
I wouldn't feed my babies anything other than a brand which had these organic ingredients. I don't think you should either. It has been proven that dogs on a natural diet such as this, tend to live longer, are healthier, and have healthier coats and skin.

Baby Eating Dog Food

Ok, this one is for the person who searched me out because their child ate dog food.

I think this is so hilarious because my little one has taken a keen liking to our girls' food!

My expert opinion is, if you are feeding your dogs a good natural food, with only human grade ingredients, then you really don't need to worry much about the baby eating it.

Although I don't think I would give it to her on a regular basis! Just to liven things up a bit, and to embarass my girl when she gets older, I am going to try to upload video of her eating dog food.

She can never complain to me that she doesn't like a certain food, because I will just bring this video out to haunt her!

I would love to hear from you! Please don't forget to rate me at the top of the page!
