What do you think?
Beautiful Thing is the best gay/lesbian movie
Fetching blurbs now... please stand byBeautiful Thing IS the best.
schmangell says:
I love this film. I was absolutely blown away when I first stumbled upon it. I wish something like this had been around in my teen years. It would have helped save me from years of self-loathing. I also think every teen should see this, not only for the kids struggling with accepting their sexuality, but for the straight kids as a lesson in acceptance.
This is a simple coming-of-age story told with great sensitivity and wit. But I think the sum is greater than its parts. It is an important film for this generation.
I hope Sony Classics sees fit to reissue the DVD in the Blu-ray format.

This film grabbed me like no other before or since. It really is just a basic coming-of-age story, but it is told with such great sensitivity and wit. I sure wish I could have seen something like this when I was young. I believe it would have helped save me from years of self-loathing. I was more like the Ste character growing up. I never found a Jamie, sadly.
-Do you think I'm queer?
-Doesn't matter what I think.
I don't think I could even breath for quite a while after that line and I've been hooked ever since.

Wrong! It's not the best!
alchemistic says:
I'd say it was probably a "good" movie, but, since I had to watch the youtube vids to remind myself I had seen it, it couldn't have had that much of an impact on me.
I have seen far better movies. But, any movie where they dare to address being gay or growing up gay is a "good" movie.
For rating this movie, if there were more selections to choose from, other then just best and not...I'd select somewhere in between. But, I had to choose it's not...

Rachael says:
I wouldn't call this movie "the best", but it was enjoyable and somehow very calming. It was a little boring and moved a tad slow, but it was very romantic. Perhaps that's my main problem with this movie, because I am not very romantic.

Showdown!
Is it okay for these boys growing up to be gay?
Fetching blurbs now... please stand byThe kids at school pick on Jaime because he's always looking longingly at them, and theres a general feeling that no one will accept his and Ste's relationship
Jaime and Ste fall in love, and find a place called The Glocuster, a gay bar where they have a good time. Jaime's mom finds out but agrees that their relationship is indeed a Beautiful Thing and allows it.
schmangell says:
Is it OK for the choir to sing? If that's what they are, then it's more than OK.
Like Bill Belechick says, "It is what it is."

alchemistic says:
Well sure it's "OK" for these boys to be growing up gay! That's like asking if it's ok to be growing up blonde or Dutch. Being gay isn't a choice, you are born gay.
You can "act" as though you're not gay, whe you are. You can try to fool everyone, but you wont fool yourself without doing damage to your spirit/soul.

Rachael says:
What a question--of course it's okay! They'll have some problems, like at school and such, but they'll make it through. If they don't, then it wasn't meant to be.
