Have The Time Of Your Life

Set in the early '60's Dirty Dancing is the coming of age story of a young woman (Jennifer Grey) who falls hard for a dance instructor (Patrick Swayze) at a Catskills vacation retreat.

Just as the beginning of the 60's marked the end of the age of innocence for the United States, this movie reflects the end of Baby's innocence and the awakening of her feelings as a young woman.

Dirty Dancing

Wikipedia Article

Dirty Dancing is a 1987 romance film credited as being one of the most watched films of all time, particularly among women.[2] Written by Eleanor Bergstein, the film features Patrick Swayze, Jennifer Grey, Cynthia Rhodes, and Jerry Orbach. The story details the moment of time that a teenaged girl crosses over into womanhood both physically and emotionally, through a relationship with a dance instructor during a family summer vacation. Approximately one third of the movie involves dancing scenes, and the finale has been described as "the most goosebump-inducing dance scene in movie history."[1][3]

Originally a low-budget film by a new studio and with no major stars (at the time), Dirty Dancing became a massive hit. It has earned $US 300 million worldwide, and was the first film to sell over one million copies on home video.[4] The Dirty Dancing soundtrack is one of the best selling soundtracks of all time, generating two multi-platinum albums and multiple singles, including, "(I've Had) The Time of My Life", which won both the Golden Globe and Academy Award for Best Original Song, as well as a Grammy Award for best duet. In 2004, the film spawned a sequel, Dirty Dancing: Havana Nights, as well as a stage version in 2005 which has had sellout performances in Australia, Germany, and the UK, and opened in its first North American city, Toronto, in November 2007. The 20th anniversary of the film's release was on August 21, 2007, and was marked with increased press attention,[4] a 20th-anniversary DVD, and a new Dirty Dancing computer game.

Why I Love Dirty Dancing

Dirty Dancing (20th Anniversary Edition)

Amazon Price: $9.49 (as of 10/12/2008)

The sexual tension between Baby and Johnny is electrifying, the music is great, and the dance scenes are exciting. I've got to tell you I don't much go for Chick Flicks but this one really got to me.

Johnny: Nobody puts Baby in a corner.

Baby: Me? I'm scared of everything. I'm scared of what I saw, I'm scared of what I did, of who I am, and most of all I'm scared of walking out of this room and never feeling the rest of my whole life the way I feel when I'm with you.

Movie Trivia

The song "She's Like The Wind" was co-written by 'Patrick Swayze ' with Stacy Widelitz and sung by Patrick Swayze.

The song "She's Like The Wind", originally written for Grandview, U.S.A. (1984), was later used in this movie instead.

Voted #2 Must See Movie of all time by listeners of Capital FM in London.

Cynthia Rhodes (Penny Johnson) was the first to be cast.

Throughout the film, Johnny and Baby always wear contrasting colors, Baby in very light colors, and Johnny in black or something very dark.

The film was re-released in 1997 solely due to a petition led by late-night talk show host Conan O'Brien in which he asked viewers to send letters calling for the film's re-release. When exhibitors finally agreed, O'Brien joked that he actually didn't like the movie all that much.

The film was set in the summer, yet the lake scene where they were practicing the lift was filmed in October. Since the leaves were already turning, they had to paint the leaves in the background. If you look closely you can see where they missed a few in one spot.

'Jennifer Grey (I)' , at 27, was 10 years older than the character of Baby. During her audition, she had 5 minutes to prove she could play younger, and that she had the moves for the role.
