Roundly dismissed as one of Steven Spielberg's least successful efforts, this very underrated film poignantly follows the World War II adventures of young Jim (a brilliant Christian Bale), caught in the throes of the fall of China. What if you once had everything and lost it all in an afternoon? What if you were only 12? Bale's transformation, from pampered British ruling-class child to an imprisoned, desperate, nearly feral boy, is nothing short of stunning. Also stunning are exceptional sets, cinematography, and music (the last courtesy of John Williams) that enhance author J.G. Ballard's and screenwriter Tom Stoppard's depiction of another, less familiar casualty of war.

In a time when competitors were releasing "comedic," derivative coming-of-age films, Empire of the Sun stands out as an epic in the classic David Lean sense--despite confusion or perceived competition with the equally excellent The Last Emperor (also released in 1987, and also a coming-of-age in a similar setting). It is also a remarkable testament to, yes, the human spirit. And despite its disappointing box-office returns, Empire of the Sun helped to further establish Spielberg as more than a commercial director and set the standard, tone, and look for future efforts Schindler's List and Saving Private Ryan. --N.F. Empire Of The Sun IS the best.

epatrice says:

It warms my heart to know someone else feels that Empire Of The Sun was the best movie ever!! I loved it and it actually chokes me up thinking about it. Sometimes I think I was the only person on earth who saw it because I went to see it alone and raved to so many who just looked at me like I was crazy - I recall so much right now. What a pity for them! It was a travesty that Spielburg wasn't properly acknowledged for this great work! That year he was blacklisted rumor was and my what a shame. Thank you for this great lens!!

papawu says:

Thank God I"m not the only person to see and love this film! I have spoken of this movie to people over the years and they simply don't seem to know what I'm talking about.I'm not sure, but I believe this may have been Christian Bale's first major film as well.

AslanBooks says:

Possibly my favorite movie of all time.

lloviniiit says:

the freakin best movie on this planet

Wrong! It's the worst!

jonno says:

the movie is alright, but theres only so much you can do with such a boring and montonous book

spielberg did his best with the poor material (book) he was provided with, a valiant effort indeed

The classic, award-winning novel, made famous by Steven Spielberg's film, tells of a young boy's struggle to survive World War II in China.

Jim is separated from his parents in a world at war. To survive, he must find a strength greater than all the events that surround him.

Shanghai, 1941 -- a city aflame from the fateful torch of Pearl Harbor. In streets full of chaos and corpses, a young British boy searches in vain for his parents. Imprisoned in a Japanese concentration camp, he is witness to the fierce white flash of Nagasaki, as the bomb bellows the end of the war...and the dawn of a blighted world.

Ballard's enduring novel of war and deprivation, internment camps and death marches, and starvation and survival is an honest coming-of-age tale set in a world thrown utterly out of joint.

This is a film I haven't really recognized as something I wozoomsnuguld enjoy. It was a different time then when it was first in theaters. A different time for me. Now I have found more joy in things that have been set aside so this is a must see for me.
