That's Right, Woodchuck Chuckers, It's Groundhog Day!

Phil Connors (Bill Murray) is a weatherman who has to do a broadcast about the famous groundhog of Punxsutawney. Will the groundhog see his shadow? Phil couldn't care less. It becomes the least of his worries when he wakes up the next day to discover that it's February 2nd-- again! It's like the previous day never happened. He's reliving the same day over and over again. He's the only one who remembers events from the "previous" day.

At first, Phil is bewildered and thinks he's suffering from a hallucination. Then he begins to see advantages: He can get drunk, smoke, steal, eat ice cream, and do whatever he wants without dealing with the consequences.

And then he spirals into despair. Can he escape from this time loop? And will he ever get that cute producer girl to like him?

Why I Love Groundhog Day

Groundhog Day (Special 15th Anniversary Edition)

Amazon Price: $12.99 (as of 10/12/2008)

There's something oddly fun about watching a man wake up to relive same day over and over and over again. I love the little cafe, the bed and breakfast, and the overall feel of the town (even if it isn't really Punxsutawney). Somehow the story is told just right. It makes me wonder: What would you do if you had to live the same day over and over?

Heck yeah! I could learn how to make ice sculptures and play the piano.

As long as I knew it wouldn't go on forever, yeah, I could see the advantages. I'd have all the time in the world to pick up new hobbies and become an expert at something.

Heck no! I'd go absolutely insane and kill myself every morning.

Groundhog Day Trivia

  • Tom Hanks was originally going to be cast as Phil Connors, but then the director changed his mind. Hanks was just too "nice" for the role.

  • How long did Phil keep reliving February 2nd? According to Harold Ramis (the director), it was about 10 years. Merciful, considering that he originally planed for 10,000 years!

  • When Bill Murray is learning to play the piano, that really is him fumbling with the keys. He doesn't read music, but he has a good ear.

  • The movie was filmed in Woodstock, Illinois.

  • The groundhog bit Bill Murray, apparently when Bill was "teaching" it how to drive.

Phil: This is pitiful. A thousand people freezing their butts off waiting to worship a rat. What a hype. Well, it used to mean something in this town. They used to pull the hog out and they used to eat it. You're hypocrites! All of you!

Phil: This is one time where television really fails to capture the true excitement of a large squirrel predicting the weather.

Phil: She makes noises like a chipmunk when she gets really excited.

What do you think of Groundhog Day?

Victoria, a great pick for a movie. It is one of the best in my collection. It has wit and is very entertaining. Most I like the idea of it. Isn't it so? We do the same thing over and over again. Rarely do we really change, or let something new to be introduced to our minds. And death is no escape.
