This Movie Rocks!

Directed by Norman Jewison and starring Ted Neely, this wonderfully funky 70's rendition reveals the last days of Jesus' life. The film version, released in 1973 was loved and hated, criticized and honored...closely matching the life experiences and struggles of His time on earth.

As a movie, it has a way of making you look into your heart about your beliefs and how we choose fight or flight in the face of controversy or peer pressure. It incorporates courage, conviction, and belief of the intangibles in life. When or even if you choose to watch this version, consider this quote by Edward Young, "We are all born originals -- why is it so many of us die copies?"

Jesus Christ Superstar
(Special Edition)

Though it may seem dated, JESUS CHRIST SUPERSTAR is still a film worth checking out. Ever since its origin as a concept recording, the subject and how it was presented caused its controversy for the time. The film may not be what everyone expected, but it is visually incredible. The sunsets over the Israeli deserts are awesome. The music, though not groundbreaking, is still some of the best work Andrew Lloyd Webber has written, as well as the lyrics of Tim Rice. The performances are incredible, notably Carl Anderson as Judas and Ted Neely as Jesus. Yvonne Elliman (Mary Magdalene) and Barry Dennen (Pilate) are the original actors of the concept album and Broadway adaptation of the rock opera. Arthur J.Perez

Lines of Trust

Makin' you think

In this clip it's obvious that Jesus seems disheartened, yet knows his plight. In his moment of respite, Judas overlooks his trusted friend's discouragement to see only the bigger picture of 'saving the poor from their lot'. He missed the meaning of true friendship!

Poor old Judas...

So long Judas!

In this clip, Judas meets ALL his demons. #1 is his realization of the horrors of betrayal. It is almost too hard to watch!

Quotes From The Film

  • God, thy will is hard. But you hold every card. I will drink your cup of poison, nail me to your cross and break me, bleed me, beat me, kill me! Take me now, before I change my mind! Jesus
  • All your followers are blind, too much heaven on their minds. Judas
  • One thing I'll say for him, Jesus is cool. Caiaphas
  • I dreamed I met a Galilean, a most amazing man. He had that look you very rarely find, the haunting, hunted kind. I asked him to say just how it started, and how it all began, I asked him twice, he never said a word, as if he hadn't heard. And next, I dreamed the room was full of wild and angry men, they seemed to hate this man. They fell on him and then dissapeared again. And then I heard thousands of millions crying for this man, and then I heard them mentioning my name, and leaving me the blame. Pontius Pilate
  • I don't know how to love him. I don't know why he moves me. He's a man, he's just a man. And I've had so many men before, in very many ways, he's just one more. Mary Magdalene
  • Christ, there must be over fifty thousand screaming love and more for you! And every one of fifty thousand would do whatever you asked them to! Keep them yelling their devotion, but add a touch of hate at Rome! You will rise to a greater power! We shall win ourselves a home! Simon Zealotes

Angst of Love

You must watch this!

In this clip, a tortured and confused Mary Magdalene professes to the heavens her undying love to the only man in her life that she knows she cannot have in the bodily sense. Even until the end of His life on earth she remained steadfast and committed!

Who is Ted Neely?

He is not just a man...he is a man on a mission. Portraying Jesus on road shows, post the 1973 movie has pluses and minuses. Story be told by Ted, the pluses he and the cast have experienced overcome anything even resembling a negative.

Picture from the journey inward

The Crucifixion....

End to the beginning!

In this clip, Jesus of Nazareth is crucified! The cruelty of this form of corporal punishment is not pacified. The mentality of a frenzied crowd is surreal. Even though it is shortened in this video versus the film version, please be aware it is NOT easy to watch!

Great way to get the Word out

aj2008 says:

I never saw the film - BUT I did see the original stage show in London! Awesome!!!!!

CosmeticMom says:

I saw Jesus Christ Superstar 13 times when I was about 13! I joined the Ted Neely Fan Club too! The Film was the closest to "True" Scripture I have ever seen and still love it to this day!

sittonbull says:

Anytime you want to reach young people... you have a better chance of doing it through music! JCS was controversial when it came out, but it was the 60's and that just made it more hip for those of us in that era. JCS has stood the test of time... & remains a "powerful" way to get the word out as both the movie, the play and the music have become classics and have continue to be enjoyed by large crowds.

Tara says:

I have never been particularly religious. I gave it a try when I was younger, but for some reason having faith just wasn't enough. I watched this movie in a high school music class and I must say I find it very interesting. I have gone home and watched the videos on youtube multiple times. I'm not sure exactly how I feel about faith yet, but this movie really makes me want to give it a try.

GregGiordano says:

The Gospel is timeless and if the Word can reach people who would not normally want to hear it then I say go for it!

born in the wrong time... says:

I am in love with all musicals from the 60s and 70s. I am only 25 but I have been watching them since I was born (thanks mom)! The clips are great... the best is the stage play from 2007 his performance will make even the strongest person shed a tear.

drresearch says:

My favorite song from the movie is "Can We Start Again Please" I love the movie.

jembie says:

AMEZZIN!!!

flowergardener says:

Oh Yea, Oh Yea! Came out the year after I graduated HS, and I loved it! Any and Every way to get the word out! Ya gotta be able to speak on the person's level, and with something they enjoy. Adapt is the name!

This is all wrong!

Powerful!!

34 Years After The Movie

In this clip, you will experience an act from the stage version of Jesus Christ Superstar, starring and sung by Ted Neely of the 1973 film. To carry on the role with this passion...amazing to say the least!

I've seen the movie and seen it performed live twice and I love it! The 1st time I saw it was in the 60's live in Death Valley, Clemson's football stadium and it blew me away! The music and the story was a new way, (against much criticism at the time from conventional churchgoers), to reach young people. Good job Correen!

I haven't seen the new movie, but I did the old one. My older sisters had the album of the soundtrack too, and I loved the songs!

I haven't seen the movie yet. I'm not very much in to the musicals. It is a lovely lens though and I'll recommend to everyone to watch JCS. Thanks for sharing.
