Was Rhoda Penmark a Bad Seed?
Many years ago when I was in High School. I selected "The Bad Seed," for my dramatic interpretation competition. I have been a huge fan of this movie for years. Patty McCormack's portrayal of Rhoda Penmark was sensational. If you haven't seen this outstanding film. I encourage you to.
Before you continue on. There are a few interesting facts surrounding this movie, that I would like to share. For example, director Mervyn LeRoy insisted on using almost the entire cast from the successful Broadway version. Although Warner Bros. wasn't pleased, they relented. Due to the ending of the film. The Johnson office who at the time granted the release of major studio films refused to okay the script until the ending had been changed.
I feel the right choices had been made. The cast is brilliant, and the ending will leave you stunned.

Ah, the happy family. A picture perfect world for the Penmarks. Or is it?
Hidden behind a well groomed lawn, a private school.
The handsome, strong military husband. The beautiful devoted wife. And then completing this family protrait is Rhoda. The precocious, well-mannered adorable daughter.
Yet there is something terribly wrong with this picture. You won't know what that is until you watch it.
I will end with this. If Rhoda asked me, "What will you give me for a basketful of kisses?" I'd tell her to take whatever she wanted.
