Have You Seen, The Three Faces of Eve?

Released on September 23rd, 1957.  Perhaps, the first movie to explore the area of multiple personalities.  The screenplay is based on the true-life case study of Chris Costner Sizemore.

Joanne Woodward is absolutely flawless as she changes from the mousy Eve White, to party girl Eve Black, then two seconds later, the intelligent, stable Jane.

This is a must see for all classic movie lovers.

He will Be Missed

Fifty years of marriage, an outstanding career. We mourn the loss of an extremely talented man.

I always loved his answer when asked, "Are you ever tempted to cheat?" His response, "Why should I when I have steak at home!"

Joanne Woodward's Oscar winning portrayal of Chris Costner Sizemore. The simple southern woman who in the 1950's was diagnosed with multiple personality disorder. Although it differs from the book. Miss Woodward is amazing as housewife Eve White, the racy Eve Black, and the stable Jane. A must see movie!

About "The Three Faces of Eve"

The Plot

Eve White the mousy, unassuming wife and mother who keeps suffering from headaches and occasional black outs. Eventually she is sent to see psychiatrist Dr. Luther, and, while under hypnosis, a whole new personality emerges: the wild, fun-loving Eve Black. Under continued therapy, yet a third personality appears, the relatively calm Jane. This film, based on the true-life case of a multiple personality, chronicles Dr. Luther's attempts to reconcile the three faces of Eve. multiple personalities.

On a personal note. To say I love a movie that deals with such a painful and disturbing topic may not seem appropriate. I do feel it gives us a small glimpse into an area many know very little about.

Joanne Woodward is superb, and for that reason alone I highly recommend you see this film.

Go ahead, disagree. I dare you.

Three Faces Of Eve is the best movie ever.

Three Faces Of Eve Trivia

Before Joanne Woodward, and Lee J. Cobb were cast in the movie. There were others considered.

June Allyson had said in a television interview that she had been asked to play the part of Eve. But her husband Dick Powell felt she wouldn't be right for the part.

Judy Garland was the intended one. Director Nunnally Johnson, realized she was unreliable, and decided to go with the barely unknown, "Joanne Woodward."

The part of Dr. Luther was originally to be Orson Welles. He had even read the script. But he chose to direct "Touch of Evil," instead. He did tell the director that whoever played the lead role would win an Oscar.

And the Oscar goes to,

Can you tell me what was unique about Joanne Woodward's attire when she won the Oscar in 1958?
She made the dress herself.

The Book Collection

Which ones will you choose?

The movie was based on the book "The Three Faces of Eve," by Corbett H. Thigpen and Hervey M. Cleckley

One customer who purchased their book wrote:

I read Three Faces years ago and found it fascinating, but have since read I'M EVE by Chris Costner Sizemore and Elen Sain Pitillo and agree with the reader who says that the false information published in the original Three Faces books was no longer relevant. What was particularly fascinating was how Drs. Thigpen and Cleckley suppressed Mrs. Sizemore's attempts to get the truth out and how Dr. Thigpen worked to mold her into the image that originally was responsible for her illness--the chauvanism and repression that she was desparately trying to escape.

The Three Faces of Eve by Corbett H. Thigpen and Hervey M. Cleckley

These next two selection are from Chris Costner Sizemore. The woman who was to be known as, "Eve."

Chris Costner Sizemore was born in 1927 North Carolina to a large, loving, but generally uneducated farming family who assumed that her childhood difficulties were willful. When an abusive marriage at last drove her into psychiatric care, she was diagnoised with what is commonly known as "split personality" or "multiple personality disorder."

I'm Eve (Paperback)

Written in the third person by Pittillo from Sizemore's notes, I'M EVE paints a picture of an intelligent, creative child whose awkwardness, sensitive nature was early impacted by a series of tragedies that both she and her subsequent therapists believe caused her "splinter" into multiple personalities. Each time she was called upon to face something frightening or unpleasant, or found herself excessively frustrated, Chris Sizemore brought forth a personality specifically enabled to do what she herself could not: deal with the fear, act on the anger, express the frustration.

I'm Eve by Elen Sain Pittillo

Even after the book and the film The Three Faces of Eve broke records in the late 1950s, the identity of "Eve" was kept secret and little was known about multiple personality disorder (MPD). Subsequent publications, The Final Face of Eve and I'm Eve --both written by Sizemore in collaboration with professionals--told more of the story Sizemore augments here. Retracing her life from birth in 1927 in Virginia, the author makes one understand the "persons" who took turns submerging her until she ultimately mastered the intruders, asserting "the mind of my own." Sizemore gives credit to the therapists who helped, but none more than her husband and children, described here as miracles of "devotion, commitment," which readers will agree may be an understatement. The author has been publicly active on behalf of the mentally/emotionally ill since her recovery in 1977.
