Wendell Potter Explains: Health Insurance Companies Are Friends Only To Politicians Who Profit From YOUR Denied Claims
The healthcare reform movement is heating up here in these United States. And beneath it all, the health insurance companies are orchestrating mass hysteria.
Ask Wendell Potter. He's making his point well known on shows like Bill Moyer's News Hour, Keith Olbermann's Count Down and the Rachel Maddow Show.
The vocal minority are afraid: of change, of so-called socialism, of death panels.
Meanwhile, the Health Insurance Companies are reaping record Stock Market upswings. And why not? They think they are winning this battle.

"Health insurance...[is] is a crisis that threatens the financial stabilility of our city...in the 2007 study...the PA Economy League found that the fiscal distress of our municipalities is ... due to the "crushing burden" of funding healthcare..."

Under SB 400/HB 1660, employers no longer will bear the burden of providing or administering employee healthcare benefits... Our private healthcare system will continue, but a Medicare-type system will be set up to pay the bills.
Employers will contribute a 10% wellness payroll tax as their "Fair Share" toward financing the system. For most employers, this will represent a substantial cost savings, and the various governments and school boards of Lancaster County are no exception.
COST OF HEALTHCARE BENEFITS TO OUR LANCASTER PA COMMUNITY VERSUS WHAT THEY WOULD BE UNDER SB 400/HB 1660
Lancaster City (Cost in Employee Healthcare Benefits in 2008) $9.1 Million (32% of Payroll) (Substitute 10% Payroll Tax) $2.8 Million (Savings) $6.3 Million
Lancaster City School District (Cost in Employee Healthcare Benefits in 2008) $16.1 Million (22% of Payroll) (Substitute 10% Payroll Tax) $7.3 Million (Savings) $8.8 Million
Lancaster County (Cost in Employee Healthcare Benefits in 2008) $16.2 Million (21% of Payroll) (Substitute 10% Payroll Tax) $7.7 Million (Savings) $8.5 Million
All Remaining Lancaster County Municipalities And School Boards (Cost in Employee Healthcare Benefits in 2008) $78.6 Million (20% of Payroll) (Substitute 10% Payroll Tax) $40.1 Million (Savings) $38.5 Million

Joe Sestak Is Running Against Arlan Spector For Senate--and Here He Takes A Question From My Friend Jerry Policoff About SP
Here's What Jerry Said:
The Sestak report is important because I had an exchange with Sestak Friday
at Netroots Nation where I pointed out, and he acknowledged that his basis
for opposing the Kucinich amendment was bogus. His aide has since sent me
the letter he sends people "explaining' his vote in a similarly bogus
fashion. Part of our exchange is up on YouTube. I am not sure who put it
up, but it includes my initial question, his answer, a followup question by
someone else and his answer to that. It does not include my follow-up,
which I do have on tape, which is extremely important.
Basically he says the Kucinich amendment has a sentence that would forbid
people from opting for traditional insurance instead of using the
single-payer system, and he claimed that his daughter would only have gotten
the care she needed from private insurance. He suggested that if Kucinich
had agreed to remove that sentence he probably would have voted for the
bill. I pointed out to him that a) the single-payer bill is comprehensive
and would certainly have provided the same care his daughter got from
private insurance as well as allowing him to keep the same doctor. I also
pointed out that single-payer is exactly that: "single-payer." It only
works because it does away with the huge administrative costs generated by
private insurance. If private insurance were permitted to operate
side-by-side with single payer it would not be a single-payer plan.
Kucinich could not remove that sentence because without it he would not be
proposing a single-payer amendment.
I then pointed out to Sestak that most countries with single-payer systems
actually have hybrid systems where private insurance is permitted, but is
tightly regulated with strong oversight and clearly defined limitations. I
said it was likely that any single-payer system that was enacted here would
also be a hybrid of some sort. At that point he acknowledged that perhaps
instead of dismissing single-payer option we should be talking about what
kinds of hybrids made sense for us. It is revealing that the very next day
he was back to the talking points he acknowledged were bogus the day before.
All of this was on tape, and part of it is on You Tube:

- Great lens. As bad as things have gotten, it's hard to believe that the health insurance (actually, a better name would be "profit insurance") industry will be able to quash health care reform once again. Wendell Potter is an important voice in the push back against the dire warnings of a "government takeover of health care" from all those who are profiting from the status quo.
Anyway, great lens and I'm lensrolling this to my own Wendell Potter lens. (I would give you five stars, but Squidoo still seems to be experiencing a glitch in their rating system.
