Creator of the Gelflings and Yoda

Wendy Froud was born in Detroit, Michigan, daughter of artists Walter and Peggy Midener. She began making dolls when she was five years old. She went to the Interlochen Arts Academy for high school, followed by the Center for Creative Studies - College of Art and Design, where her parents were on the faculty. After her schooling was completed, she got a job with Jim Henson's studios in New York and London, where she worked on The Muppet Show, The Muppet Movie and The Dark Crystal.

Dollmaker, Author, Faerieworlds Host

For The Dark Crystal Wendy designed the Gelflings, Jen and Kira. She also met and worked with Brian Froud, whose book Faeries had attracted Jim Henson's attention, which led to Froud becoming the conceptual designer for the movie.

Brian and Wendy married, and had a son, Toby, who was just the right age to play the part of Sarah's toddler brother in Jim Henson's next movie Labyrinth, so the whole Froud family was involved.

Wendy Froud got involved in another movie project, George Lucas' second Star Wars movie, The Empire Strikes Back. For this, she designed one of the most popular characters of the Star Wars series, the Jedi Master Yoda.

Following their movie work, the Frouds moved back to Devon. Wendy has continued to make dolls and many of her creations are featured in the Imaginosis book The Art of Wendy Froud published in 2006.

She also worked with editor and folklorist Terri Windling on three books, The Faeries of Spring Cottage, A Midsummer Night's Faery Tale, and The Winter Child.

The Frouds have also been involved in Faerieworlds, the largest West Coast fantasy festival, and FaerieCon, its East Coast counterpart, as hosts.
