Who is a Fan of West Australian Wine

Ranked #25,118 in Food & Cooking, #543,605 overall | Donates to Acumen Fund

Over 25% of Australia's Premium wine is produced from West Australia's 4% of the nations total!

Australia's largest State spans the western third of the continent, although the winemaking regions are almost entirely concentrated in the south-western portion of the State. These regions include the Swan District near the State capital Perth and, further south, the regions of Peel, Geographe, Blackwood Valley, Pemberton, Manjimup, Great Southern and Margaret River.

Two decades ago, Margaret River was better known for the classic surf break lying not far from the junction of river and sea but entrepreneurs have driven the development of vineyards and wineries that have overcome the State's geographic isolation and carved their mark not just within Australia but around the world. This region has become known for zesty Sauvignon Blancs, superlative Cabernet Sauvignons and bold Zinfandel.

Margaret River Region

The Powerhouse

One of the most vibrant and popular wine destinations in Australia, the Margaret River has an exceptional range of restaurants, accommodation and tourist activities. After a much-publicised birth in the early 1970s prompted, in part, by Professor Harold Olmo's research but, more importantly, that of Dr John Gladstones in 1965, the region briefly lost its momentum in the late 1980s before emphatically regaining it in the 1990s.

Initially regarded as a producer of powerful yet elegant Cabernet Sauvignon, the region has since also forged a great reputation for its white wines notably Chardonnay and a Semillon Sauvignon Blanc blend. However, it is capable of producing all the classic varietal wines with the possible exception of the continental varieties, Pinot Noir and Riesling.

Pemberton

Breath Taking Beauty and grandeur

Named after and centred on the town of Pemberton, this richly timbered region was first planted experimentally in 1977, with commercial vineyards following in 1982, and enjoyed rapid growth in the 1990s. The region is situated in the lower south-west of Western Australia; west of the Great Southern and south-east of the Margaret River regions. Except for the months of December to March, Pemberton has a marginally warmer growing season climate than does neighbouring Manjimup, which may seem somewhat surprising but is confirmation that Manjimup has a more continental climate in that it warms and cools more quickly than does Pemberton.

As a result of the high annual rainfall, a number of vineyards do not use irrigation, but the very pronounced winter and spring dominance can lead to stress if subsoil moisture diminishes late in the growing season.
