Big Buckles, Cowboy Hats, Roy Rogers, and Little Boys

When I think of Western Belt Buckles I am quickly reminded of being a little boy. The thought brings up imagery of a cheap straw cowboy hat probably bought for me for Christmas, A big Cowboy Belt Buckle with scroll carefully handcrafted by a machine in China, my cowboy boots I wore everywhere, and a pair of toy six shooters hanging from my leather belt.

The imagery of what a Western Belt Buckle is is certainly ingrained deep in my own mind and probably them minds of most Americans my age. This, of course, is 100% hollywood. Images created for us by the likes of Roy Rogers and Dale Evans, John Wayne and more.

Even though that era is a bit before my time it certainly influenced my parents and in so doing carried that influence on to me.

You can see that same influence in todays Country Music stars and their big belt buckles. Today western belt buckles are more popular than ever.

Truly the belt buckle worn by the true cowboys of the West was nothing more than a friction buckle with no adornment. A purely utilitarian device unlike what we think of as a Western Belt Buckle. But such is society, we'll believe what we want to and besides it's a lot more fun.

The Traditional Western Belt Buckle

When it comes to Western Belt buckles what I envision is the traditional Texas Longhorn on a silver buckle. Maybe some scroll to set it of and a bit of gold cutout to make it really special.

This was the buckle worn in the movies by the heroes of the time and what everyone thinks of when we say cowboy belt buckle. It's truly a piece of Americana. A huge symbol of our culture.

Buckles were big and shiny. A buckle was your identity (Of course your true identity was engraved into your belt). The buckle always seemed to be the conversation piece. "Nice buckle ya got yerself there pardner". Something to be proud of. Of course if you had some major accomplishment in your life like riding a bull your buckle would say it for all the world to see. It identified us, who we are and what we believed in. that's a whole lot for a shiny piece of metal.

I guess this was just a matter of time. If you think about it the Western Fashion market has always had a stylish side to it. Fancy, out on the town Western shirts always were covered in beautiful scrolled and paisley patterns. They certainly were never understated.

Nowadays Western can mean shiny and sparkly. There is huge demand for Western Rhinestone Belt Buckles. They are certainly worn by more than just Country music singers.

You'll find Western Rhinestone Belt buckles in lots of styles from the completely covered in Rhinestone like a crystal ball to the traditional buckles with just a little bit of sparkly jewels added. It's quite a diversity in fashion even within this fashion niche.

Western Goes Wild

Western Truckers Delight

It seems the traditional Western belt buckle has melded with a variety of other fashion niches. This twist on the mudflap girl is a bit of a surprise. Truckers have been showing off the mudflap girl for many years now and many truckers are also cowboys. so this makes perfect sense. What an eyecatcher this one is. I love this buckle even though I'm not sure what category to put it in.

Western Rhinestone Belt Buckles

Cowboy meets Bling Bling

Quite an unlikely couple exists here. The bling bling hip hop world meets cowboy. but somehow it works. Cross genre accessories fit into either category. Out on the town pimped out or at your favorite Western dance hall. Either way it works.

Roy Rogers and Dale Evans - Happy Trails

I can remember my mom singing this song. I know it's been done over again a few times but I think this is the one that made it famous. Way back when TV stars were role models.

So anyway, thanks for visiting my lense and Happy Trails to You!
