West Ham United - nicknamed the Hammers - is a professional football team, playing in the English Premier League. Their best ever finish in the top league was a 3rd place in 1985-1986. They have won the FA Cup 3 times, most recently in 1980. They did, however, finish the FA cup as runners up in 2006, after a very close game against Liverpool FC.
In European football, West Ham United won the UEFA Cup winners Cup (now the UEFA Cup) in 1965, and the UEFA Intertoto Cup in 1999.
West Ham United play their home games at Upton Park, a 35,000 capacity all-seater stadium, and the clubs home ground since 1904. West Ham United is expected to move to a new stadium some time in the near future.
The club is owned by a consortium of Icelandic investors, lead by chairman Eggert Magnusson, the former President of the Icelandic FA and member of the UEFA Executive Committee. He has stated his intent to ensure that West Ham United qualifies for the UEFA Champions League on a regular basis.
West Ham United recently unveiled former Chelsea FC player Gianfranco Zola as their new manager. He came from a position as team coach for the Italian U21 team, and has yet to prove himself as a club manager.
Team captain is Lucas Neill, a reliable and versatile defender who is recognised as a right-back, but is comfortable in the centre of defence as well. He is also the team captain of the Australian national football team.
