Heartbreaking Voices of Uncertainty

The studios claim they need three years to "study" the internet to see if it will make them any profits that they could then share with the writers.

Past Strikes: The 1988 Strike on Wikipedia

Information about the 1988 strike, which lasted 5 months and cost the industry an estimated $500 million.

The 1988 Writers Guild of America strike was a strike action taken by members of both the Writers Guild of America, East (WGAE) and the Writers Guild of America, West (WGAW). It ran from March 7 to August 7, 1988, for a total of . Productions affected were television and movies. It remains the longest strike in the history of the guild, surpassing the 1960 Writers Guild of America strike by one week and the 2007-2008 Writers Guild of America strike by seven weeks.

Jay Leno, Vanessa Williams, Ray Romano, and Rachel Griffiths were reported dropping by the lines to bring food or coffee, and Meg Ryan and Sally Fields are among the other stars known to have visited the lines.

Filming has shut down on "The Office" because WGA member Steve Carell has refused to cross the lines. According to rumor, he called in sick to work with an acute case of "enlarged balls." Other cast members, including Rainn Wilson, Jenna Fischer, John Krasinski, B.J. Novak, Mindy Kaling and Paul Leiberstein, have also refused to go to the set in solidarity, and showrunner Greg Daniels was seen picketing his own set.

Robert Redford, Glenn Close, Tom Hanks, Denzel Washington, George Clooney, Ray Bradbury, and others have issued statements supporting the writers.

United Hollywood: UH EXCLUSIVE: Counter... Productive?
Unfortunately for writers, Hollywood below-the-line workers, Los Angeles businesses and, yes, even the companies themselves, what's driving the negotiations (or lack thereof) is Nick Counter's agenda. And the bizarre part is, that agenda doesn't necessarily line up with several of the congloms.

Hollywood is a town awash in hyphenates. TV is loaded with writer-producers. The movie biz is full of writer-directors. There's even a legion of actor-filmmakers like Clint Eastwood and George Clooney. But as the writers strike enters its third week, I think the future belongs to a tantalizing new hyphenate: the writer-entrepreneur.
United Hollywood: Wall Street: Congloms Let Town Suffer Rather Than Make Fair Deal

Support the Writers

  • Watch the Remaining Scripts
Writers were paid for any scripts completed before the strike. There is no reason not to watch them.
  • Sign the Petition
We, the undersigned, fully support the strike of the Writers Guild of America, and agree with the WGA's stated goals of obtaining just and fair compensation regarding revenues generated through "new media".
  • Subscribe to the Writers' YouTube Channel
An easy way to get updates
  • Do Not Download Episodes From iTunes, Amazon, or NBC Direct
Networks claim full episode downloads from these sources are a form of "promotion" and they do not need to pay the writers residuals for them. To show your support for the writers, boycott these sources until a deal is reached. To make sure your voice is heard, you can pledge your support for this boycott here.
  • Do Not Watch Streaming Episodes on Networks' Official Sites
You got it, the networks claim this is a form of "promotion," so they don't need to pay the writers residuals. To support the writers, boycott full episode streaming video on the networks' official sites. To make sure your voice is heard, you can pledge your support for this boycott here.
  • Boycott Reality Shows and Other Unscripted Television
Networks already have reality shows and other unscripted programs lined up to fill the gap when scripted shows start going off the air. This demonstrates that they never had any intention of compromise with the creative forces that keep their pockets lined. When your favorite scripted shows go off the air, turn off your TV to show your support for the writers.
  • Provide Food for Thought
Whedon and Supernatural fans have spearheaded a fan effort to provide food for the strikers. More details and information on how to donate here.
  • Hold the Line
If you live in Los Angeles or New York, show your support by joining the picket lines. For more information about where, visit the WGA. NON-WGA MEMBERS ARE WELCOME TO JOIN THE LINES. United Hollywood offers a good post on What to Expect on the Picket Lines. Demonstrations have also been organized in other parts of the country and around the world. To find out more about planned demonstrations in your area, check out United Hollywood, WGA Supporters, and Fans4Writers.
  • Educate Others
The writers' demands are complex and are being reported primarily by news stations hosted on the very networks the writers are fighting. Do your part to fight misconceptions from the general public about the causes and events of the strike.

Pencils2MediaMoguls

NOTE: As of 12/31/07, the Pencils2MediaMoguls campaign is officially over. Thank you for your support!

United Hollywood is sponsoring the Pencils2MediaMoguls campaign. For $1, you can send a box of environmentally sound pencils to the studios and the AMPTP to show your support for the writers. You can also (optionally) specify which show you're buying pencils in support of. For full details about the campaign and an order form, please go here.

Fans of Joss Whedon, Smallville, Eureka, Army Wives, Lost, and Battlestar Galactica may want to take special note.

Smallville's creator Al Gough offered a challenge to Smallville's fans and other shows alike to see whose fanbase can "really deliver the goods (in this case, pencils)." Gough announced that "for every box of environmentally friendly pencils you buy for Smallville at Unitedhollywood.com, your name will be entered into an e-raffle. We will then pick a winner at random and they will receive at phone call from Michael Rosenbaum [Lex Luthor] thanking them for their support of both the cause and the show."

Eureka's creators quickly accepted the challenge. Jaime Paglia, Eureka's co-creator, announced that a similar raffle would be held for Eureka supporters, with the prize of a phone call from Colin Ferguson (Sheriff Jack Carter) and co-creator Jaime Paglia, personally thanking them for their support.

Army Wives countered with an offer of a phone call and an autographed photo from Kim Delaney (Claudia Joy Holden) or Drew Fuller (Trevor LeBlanc).

Battlestar Galactica showrunner Ron Moore, whose support for the strike has been tireless and who has taken the opportunity to connect with his show's fanbase on the Fans4Writers Forum, also accepted the challenge.

Initially, he offered the chance to attend a hockey game in Vancouver with Aaron Douglas ("Chief"). (If the winnter of the Aaron Douglas raffle is unable to go to Vancouver, he or she will receive a personal phone call and a piece of signed memorabilia instead.) This was quickly followed by offers for phone calls from Mary McDonnell (Laura Roslin), Tricia Helfer (Number Six), Michael Hogan (Colonel Tigh), or Michael Trucco (Sam Anders). And, not to be outdone, Jamie Bamber ("Apollo") offered to donate two of the towels he's worn on the show to the two fans who buy the most pencils in his name, with a third to be raffled at random from the Battlestar Galactica fans.

Yes, THAT towel.

To take part in any of the Battlestar Galactica raffles, type "BSG" plus the name of the actor of your choice in the "What TV show are you supporting?" box.

Lost also joined the challenge. Lost showrunners Damon Lindelof and Carlton Cuse offered a grand prize of a personal thank-you call from Carlton, Damon, and Matthew Fox in which they will answer questions about the show's mysteries and a Season 3 DVD set. Other Lost prizes include a signed finale script by writers Damon and Carlton and a surprise cast member, and a signed Season 3 DVD Set by the entire writing staff!

Joss Whedon, another of the strike's most prominent supporters, has also offered a phone call to a fan to be drawn randomly from those who have bought a pencil in support of his shows.

Help Writers and Crew in Need

Contrary to popular belief, the majority of writers involved in the strike are not raking in big bucks for their work. In fact, at any given time, about 48% of the membership of the WGA is unemployed, or working other jobs to earn enough to make ends meet. For many WGA members, the strike will cause a genuine hardship if it continues too long.

The same is true of the workers "below-the-line" - the crew members. These workers are already being laid off as production shuts down on major shows, and the situation will only get worse before it gets better.

The WGA has a $12 million dollar strike fund that will help writers in need get through the strike. However, crew members, unless they are also WGA members, will not have access to the fund. Fortunately, there is a non-profit organization called The Actors Fund that provides direct, confidential assistance to any entertainment industry professionals in need. You can find donation information here, and please be sure to specify that you'd like your donation to assist a writer or crew member affected by the strike.

Another effort, spearheaded by Whedon fans, is also underway to provide support for below-the-line crew members, with details here.
