I Love Wagon Wheels!
The wagon wheel reminds us of horse-drawn carriages, buggies, covered wagons, and of generations past who pioneered the American dream. Can you imagine living a life of all firsts? Well, that was the lifestyle of American pioneers. A new country, new life, new freedom, new home, new job, new school, and for some, even a new family.
A 19th century life was difficult, and not everyone survived it's novelties. But they were a persistent, hard-working people. America's pioneers laid the ground work for us. Years of caring about future generations has made our lives much easier. Now, wagon wheels are treasured antiques. Likewise, many of our once useful tools are now relics of the past due to new technology, new inventions, new trades, new medicine, extreme growth, and free enterprise.
Although life was much harder for pioneers than for people today, I cannot help but think that they were in better physical condition, had a better work ethic (a hand-shake was a man's promise and it was kept), and families stuck together through thick and thin. But those who lived in those days didn't think it was too hard. They accepted their way of life. After all, they didn't know what a computer was, a cell phone, a car, or even a washing machine! It didn't mean much to walk a mile or more to school, ride a horse to work, or hitch up a buckboard to buy household supplies.
I almost wish I had been born in the days when horses were the main means of transportation. You didn't have to pay for gasoline, just grow your own feed. Well, it's not likely we'll be reverting back to those days any time soon... and I have to admit that I like my dishwasher and washing machine, as well as drive-through restaurants and computers.
Will you go on a delightful journey with me? As I display my favorite symbol, the wagon wheel, I'd also like to take you back in time to visit America's horse-drawn era.

Wheels: A Pictorial History
by Edwin Tunis
Amazon Price: $22.50 (as of 07/10/2009)![]()
Used Price: $3.86
Nothing like the wheel exists in nature; it may be one of humanity's greatest inventions. In Wheels, writer and illustrator Edwin Tunis traces the development of the wheel over 5,000 years, his accurate drawings and lucid text depicting the human victory over space and inertia. Beginning with the first primitive form of wheel--the captive roller--Tunis takes readers through the history of land transportation from the Elamite chariot--the first recorded passenger chariot--to the ancient wheeled vehicles of the Egyptians, Assyrians, Greeks, Persians, Romans, Chinese, and Indians; the whirlicotes, carrosses, berlines, fiacres, and phaetons that traveled the roads of Europe from the Middle Ages to the Industrial Age; the Conestoga wagons, prairie schooners, and Concord coaches that carried Americans westward; the velocipede, the world's first bicycle, and its successor, the penny-farthing; steam-powered wheeled carriages like the Dudgeon and La Mancelle; Karl Benz's 1885 gasoline tricycle and the 1896 Ford quadricycle; the roadsters of the Jazz Age; and the gloriously chromed and tail-finned sedans of the 1950s.
The history of the wheel is the story of civilization, and in Wheels--which won the Boy's Club of America's Gold Medal when it was first published in 1955--Tunis tells it with wit and illustrates it with striking drawings that will delight readers of all ages.

Wheels of Progress
Nothing is more symbolic of American history than a traditional wagon wheel. In early colonial times, the wagon played an essential role in the country's growth and expansion. From ocean to ocean, and from Canada to Mexico, transporting people and supplies over long distances was made possible by wagons. Wagons, buckboards, stagecoaches, and carriages all played important parts in American history. Today, wagon wheels add rustic charm to lawns and homes, and carry rich reminders of the historic road traveled by pioneers of the American West.

Wagon Wheel Tiring

Wagons, carriages, and buggies were the main source of transportation in the 1800's. The wood wheels would shrink and crack with changes in moisture and temperature, sometimes resulting in the tire falling off. Blacksmiths could shrink the tires back onto the wheels or fabricate new wheels and tires. Some blacksmiths specialized in this and were known as wheelwrights.

Whether an antique original, or a hand crafted, authentic replica, wagon wheels lend a rugged appeal to both outdoor and inside settings. Generally constructed of a hardwood hub, a steam-bent hardwood felloe, and plate steel tyre, the fact that many original wagon wheels are still available is testimony to the solid durability built into these timeless relics.

This book on making Working Wagon Wheels is designed to give the wood worker all of the information necessary to make a strong wheel that looks like the early wooden wheel. The approach was to design a wheel that looks like an old wheel but did not require mortise joints and holes or the need to steam and bend the wood. There are many options possible in this book that allow the wood worker to instill his or her own design ideas to make your wheel unique. The design as shown will result in a wheel that looks almost exactly like a wheel 100 years old. We have picked the most popular style of the era to use for the design in this book.
Working Wagon Wheels is a fully illustrated book, that is spiral bound to allow the woodworker to lay it on a work bench and turn page by page without the book folding back losing your place. The easy-to-read instructions are illustrated with actual pictures of each step of assembly and accompanied with scaled drawings when necessary, making each steps a simple procedure.

Wheels of Fortune

A unique blend of art, craft and history, the skill of the modern day wheelwright keeps a rare piece of American history rolling for future generations. While providing authentic wheels for wagon restorations, exhibitions, historic attractions, or to simply add an old west feel to the surroundings, reproducing authentic wagon wheels has become a thriving business. Pot holders, chandeliers, photo stands, multiple wind chime and whirligig hangers, are just a few of its creative uses. Many functional and decorative styles are now available, or you can create your own.
Wagon Wheels A'Rollin
by Daisy Ackley, Catherine Belle, Pier Goldsby Brown
Amazon Price: $26.95 (as of 07/10/2009)![]()
Used Price: $27.54
Daisy Bell Catherine Brown was only eight years old in 1880, when her physician father, her mother, grandmother, siblings and other relatives decided to join the wagon train in May Day, Kansas, and head for Oregon on the Old Oregon Trail.
This is her story, which she began writing seventy-two years later when she was eighty years old.
In the meantime, she married three times: First to David Pier, at the age of sixteen, to whom she bore eight children. When he died, she married Al Goldsby, and after his death, Charles Ackley, whom she also outlived. She died at the age of ninety-three.
Daisy saw it all, from a wagon train crossing the plains to astronauts in space. She tells how it was on the American frontier, when men were men and women were glad of it.
