Whales are actually related to Cows and Camels.

Alien yet familiar Animals, Whales are Mammals who have totally adapted to the ocean, which is a hostile environment to air breathers. Scientists believe that the ancestor for Whales was a fish-eating land Mammal, related to modern hoofed Mammals. Further DNA tests show that Whales are actually related to Cows and Camels.

Beluga whales

Beluga whales have a flexible neck due to cervical vertebrae (backbone) that are not fused, as in other cetaceans. This allows them to move their head up, down, and to the side. Their bulbous forehead, called a melon, is also very flexible allowing them to make many different facial expressions. Movement of the melon is associated with the production of sounds

List of whale species

  • Sperm Whale
    Sperm whales feed chiefly on squid, octopus, and cuttlefish. A gray, cheeselike substance called ambergris, valuable as a perfume fixative, forms in the whale's intestine around the irritating, undigested beaks of squids. It is often expelled by vomiting and floats in chunks on the water.
  • Blue Whale
    The calf is nursed for 6 months and reaches puberty in about 3 years. Blue whales may live 100 years or more.
  • Fin Whale
    Fin Whales are enormous animals. The longest specimens - typically females found in Southern Hemisphere populations can be up to 26 m in length and weigh 120,000 kg.
  • Bryde's Whale
    Bryde's Whales are the least-known and in many ways the most unusual of the rorquals. They are small by rorqual standards-no more than about 25 tonnes-prefer tropical and temperate waters to the polar seas that other whales in their family frequent;
  • Humpback Whale
    Alongside its aerial acrobatics, the Humpback Whale is well known for its long and complex "song". The whale repeats patterns of low notes that vary in amplitude and frequency in consistent patterns over a period of hours or even days. The songs only occur during the mating season, so it is supposed that the song is used for courting. Also interesting is the fact that a whale's unique song slowly evolves over a period of years -never returning to the same sequence of notes even after decades.
  • Right Whale
    They were so named by whalers, who for centuries considered them "the right whales" to hunt, because they float when killed and because they yield enormous quantities of oil and of baleen. Baleen, or whalebone, is the substance forming the fringed, triangular plates that hang from the roof of the whale's mouth and serve as a filter for plankton. It commanded such a high price in the 19th cent.

Great Stuff

This book is universally recognised in the whale conservation world as the best of all field guides to whales, dolphins and porpoises. It has no peer for accuracy of information, and the drawings of species are the most reliable you can find. The organisation I am with, the Whale and Seal Foundation, gives a copy to every student in our marine mammal rescue workshop where we train government agencies and carer groups in whale rescue including species identification.
