What's All the Fuss About Antioxidants?

Antioxidants are found in many natural foods - from berries to broccoli, and even coffee and chocolate! They offer super protection for the body against all types of diseases and problems - especially those caused by free radicals.

Free radicals are molecules which have split in an odd way, leaving an unpaired electron floating around. These free radicals are unstable, and they can react with other compounds, trying to get back their lost electron.

The Super Antioxidant Diet and Nutrition Guide:
A Health Plan for the Body, Mind, and Spirit

Free radicals tend to attack the nearest stable molecule in an attempt to take an electron from it. This causes that molecule to become a free radical, which will then attack other molecules.

Eventually, this can lead to conditions such as cancer. Antioxidants help protect against damage from free radicals.

Antioxidants can actually give one of their electrons to a free radical, ending the cycle of reaction! The great thing about antioxidants is that they are stable, even if they lose an electron.

So they can protect the body, without causing additional damage. There are several types of antioxidants that we know of, and there may be dozens, or even hundreds that we haven't yet discovered.

Lycopene is a potent antioxidant that was not even discovered until the 1980s. Before then, we had no idea just how great tomatoes could actually be for us!

This is why it's so important to eat a balanced diet. You can take vitamin supplements that contain antioxidants, but what about those that haven't yet been discovered?

Not only that, but many types of vitamins and minerals have been shown to be difficult to metabolize properly when given in tablet form. They're only fully absorbed and utilized when eaten in their natural state. So taking a pill may not be enough to get the full effect of antioxidants for your body.

Goji Berries: Antioxidant Miracle?

How much antioxidant power do goji berries have?

Goji berries, one of nature's most powerful antioxidants and also known as wolfberries, are mostly grown in the mountains of Tibet. They have been used by the Tibetan people thousands of years as a source of food and healing power.

Recently, goji berries have become known as a super food. They contain calcium, potassium, iron, zinc, selenium, riboflavin, vitamin C, and beta carotene all in very significant quantities.

But best of all, they have a whopping 25,300 ORAC score!
So what does that mean, anyway?

The ORAC scale is a scale for measuring the antioxidant content of foods. To compare goji berries to other foods, let's take a peek at the ORAC score of some other well-known super foods.

Goji berries - 25,300
Black raspberries, 7,700
Prunes - 5,770
Blueberries - 2,400
Spinach - 1,770
Broccoli - 880

WOW! Goji berries have over 25 times the antioxidant power of broccoli, and over three times that of black raspberries! Goji berries are truly worthy of the super food title.

You can eat dried goji berries as a snack, like raisins. You can use them in cookies and other baked goods. And you can blend them into smoothies for a wonderful sweet berry flavor! Gogi berries are one of the best antioxidants you can find on the market today!

Antioxidants in Chocolate

Is chocolate really good for you?

You've probably been hearing recently that chocolate is suddenly good for you, right? Do you believe the hype?

Santander Dark Chocolate 70% Cocoa Bar

Actually, chocolate can be VERY good for you if you eat the right type. Milk chocolate (like Hershey's kisses or Cadbury bars) is still considered something that should only be an occasional treat. It has only about half of the antioxidant content of dark chocolate, but it is much higher in sugar.

DARK chocolate, especially 65% or greater cocoa content chocolate, is very high in antioxidants, and has less sugar than milk chocolate. Does that mean you can eat all you want? Of course not.

It still contains sugar, and is high in fat. You can feel free to have an ounce or two per day, but don't go overboard. Too much of a good thing isn't always a good thing. :)

Gogi100 By Genesis - 100% Pure Gogi Juice

Goji 100 by Genesis Today
32 fl. oz
100% Pure Goji Juice

The legendary GOGI BERRY (Lycium barbarum) has been used for over 3000 years for its healing properties. But according to Dr. Lindsey Duncan, N.D., C.N., modern scientific studies show that benefits may far exceed legends - Over 50 studies to date! -
Published in prestigious health journals such as Internal Immunopharmacology, The British Journal of Nutrition, China Pharmacology and Toxicology, Journal of Chinese Herbal Medicine.

And to our knowledge, Genesis offers the ONLY
100% PURE Gogi Juice on the market today. You get
30,000 mg of pure Goji Juice in just 1 fluid ounce!

Here are some of the reasons why I love this particular berry drink.

* Pure goji juice is the richest source of carotenoids among all known plants and foods around the world! Goji berries have more beta carotene than carrots. Enzymes in the liver also transform beta-carotene into vitamin A.

* This powerful antioxidant berry contains over 25 times the antioxidant power of broccoli to fortify the body against disease and to provide energy the body needs in healing.

* The polysaccharides contained in the goji berry are powerful immune system boosters. Specifically, there are four unique polysaccharides in goji - LBP 1, 2, 3, and 4 - which have been found to be secretagogues, substances that stimulate the pituitary gland's secretion of the powerful innate anti-aging hormone hGH (human growth hormone).

* Gogi juice contains significant amounts of zinc, calcium, selenium, phosphorus, and germanium in addition to many novel compounds not found in other foods or plants, such as solavetivone.

Makes me wonder...
Could the goji berry be a major reason that the Tibetan people are famous for their longevity? It's certainly not due to a lack of harsh environment!

I go for the chocolate! I found some great chocolates - really exclusive ones - as well as gift baskets on Mothers Day Flowers And Gift Baskets (which don't require Mothers Day to give or eat!) as well as some elaborate fruit gift baskets, but I also love Mona Vie and Goji, as well as my "staple" fresh-ground golden flax seed (on yogurt or cottage cheese for co-factors that boost the effectiveness many times over). Thanks for this lens.
