What are nightshade plants?

Nightshade plants are plants which have developed a means of defending itself against predators who may wish to consume them. These predators generally being small creatures such as bugs, or insects, but may also include larger creatures such as us humans.

Nightshade plants produce a toxic substance to protect themselves from being eaten, but these deadly nightshade plants are really not as scary as the term sounds, unless you are an insect that is. The toxin produced by nightshade plants is in small amounts so usually only extremely harmful to small creatures. Unfortunately these toxins within the nightshade family of plants can cause an allergic reaction, or food sensitivity in some people, so are indeed a food source which it is wise for some individuals to avoid.

So do you know which vegetables and plants are nightshade plants?

What these nightshade plants all have in common is that they contain a protective toxin within them to prevent bugs, insects, and small animals from consuming them. When you consume these plants you also consume that toxic substance.

List of Nightshade vegetables, plants, and foods...

There are over 2800 species of nightshade plants all of which fall into the classification of Polemoniales or Solanaceae. These nightshade plants come in many forms and can be foods, herbs, shrubs, or trees. Some of these being so common that we might never have considered them to be a member of this distinct family.

Some of the most common nightshade plants are the white potato, tomato, eggplant, green, yellow or red bell pepper, hot peppers, and the tobacco plant.

Other less common nightshade plants include the mandrake, belladonna, tomatillos, tamarios, pepinos, pimentos, ground cherries (Physalis), garden huckleberry (Solanum melanocerasum), and Morning Glory.

Common seasonings or spices that are derived from nightshade plants are Tabasco sauce, Paprika, and Cayenne pepper.

It is important to know which plants fall under the category of a nightshade plant because a large number of people suffer from ill health reactions when they come in contact with these plants. Many people with existing health problems have no idea that their current illness may be caused by an allergy to nightshade plants.

Why Most Allergies To Nightshade Plants Occur...

Most of us know that the tobacco plant is not good for us because it contains a little chemical that we all know by the name of "nicotine". However, what most people do not realize is that other nightshade plants such as eggplant, and tomato, also contain these same chemicals. The nightshade family of plants have a distinct protective defense mechanism to keep insects from consuming them, they produce alkaloids, a nitrogen containing structure designed to poison the offending insect.

There are four types of alkaloids distinct to the nightshade family of plants, steroid alkaloids, pyrrolizidine alkaloids, indole alkaloids, and tropane alkaloids. Health effects from the consumption of these can result in joint or nervous system disorders, digestive problems, loss of calcium in bone or increase of calcium in soft tissue, as well as other health related problems.

This is why sensitivities to the nightshade family of plants are quite common. The people who ingest members of the nightshade family consume the very alkaloids that the plant produces to ward off offending insects. They eat the very poisons that the nightshade plant produces to keep itself from being consumed.

Nightshade plants that are known to cause an intolerance within people are generally the white potato, tomato, eggplant, green, yellow or red bell pepper, hot pepper, tobacco, mandrake, belladonna and morning glory. It is important to note that nightshade food products are sometimes hidden within other foods or fall under the guise of a seasoning or spice. This includes such foods as Pimentos, Paprika, Cayenne pepper, and Tabasco sauce.

    Yikes... I probably eat more food from the nightshade family than all other types of fruits and veggies combined, and I've had odd health problems lately, which is unusual for me. Thanks for this lens... perhaps eliminating nightshade family foods is one more thing I ought to try!

    I discovered that I had a nightshade allergy when I was about 40. For years I suffered from facial blemishes, and over time I began to develop digestive problems. I never realized that the source of my problems were the nightshade vegetables I was eating because the problems were not immediate, but would appear about 12-24 hours after eating nightshade foods. When I eliminated them from my diet, my face cleared up and I stopped having stomach problems. For me the worst culprits were peppers, uncooked tomatoes, and sun-dried tomatoes. I rarely have a reaction to potatoes.
    It might have taken longer to diagnose myself if not for my older brother. He told me he was allergic to nightshade vegetables, so I looked into the issue as well and after eliminating them from my diet, discovered that I was allergic to them as well.

    No I had no idea! I have Reumatoid Arthritis and my mom had Lupus - but I eat raw green peppers all the time and LOVE them! Also potatoes and tomatoes. I do not get sick to my stomach. Do you think I need to be avoiding them? Thanks for this informative lens.

    The only way to tell if nightshade plants are the cause of your health problems is to stop eating them for about 4 weeks and see if your health improves. If nothing seems to change then reintroduce them back into your diet after that time and see if you feel any differently at that time.

    Very interesting. Thanks for the information on nightshade plants. I've long known to try and steer clear of peppers as they give me indigestion - now I know why. However, I've never liked potatoes either and this probably explains why. Just the smell of them makes me feel ill! Now I just have to work out what to replace peppers with in all those recipes that use them!

    I know that too many tomatoes can cause me to get a cold sore on my lip from the high acid content. Otherwise, I seem to do OK with them, potatoes and green peppers. Quite interesting.

    The different nightshade plants have various amounts of the poison within them. Green tomatoes and white potatoes which have turned green have higher amounts of these toxins. Watch for this when you choose your produce.

    I read this lens from top to bottom. I really learned a lot here. I had never heard of nightshade vegetables before. I have many diagnosed food allergies, but was not tested for any of the foods on your list. I will discuss this with my allergist. This is a very informative lens.

    It is the alkaloids in Nightshade plants which make them difficult for some people to tolerate. I know that I am now more careful when I consume nightshade plants just in case they are a part of what makes me ill.

    Hi if you suffer from inflammation, I recommend the diet from dr Seignalet. I recently read a book by Jaqueline Lagace who is director of a research center at University of Montreal and cured her Rhumatoid Arthritis with that diet. Basically it is no grains except rice And a few other exceptions. no dairy. cooking meats a low temperature below 230F to avoid formation of glycotoxins, no hydrogenated fats, no French fries or chips because of acrymalide. I'm sorry the book is, I think, only available in French for now. It is very well documented, over 300 references to scientific articles. I hope this helps you.
