40% of Woman Have Hair Loss...Find Out Why

Have you noticed a hair loss pattern that is not one bald spot, but rather over almost the entire head?

How about hair loss in the corner of the eyebrows, arms and legs?

These are all classic signs of some sort of problem with the thyroid gland or the thyroid hormone itself.

The thyroid hormone is used by the body to regulate the activity of almost every cell in the body.  When someone has low thyroid amounts or poor utilization, the cells begin to slow down and work less efficient.

Since this happens in almost every cell in the body, you are having problems in a lot of different areas.  Your body then has to decide how to split up the limited supply of the hormone that it has to use.

There is one thing for certain: your body will always use what it has to survive first and foremost.

Since your hair is not really as useful for survival as say your brain or heart, it might be the first thing that takes a hit.  Thinning hair or hair loss may be an early indicator of a thyroid problem.

Here's the tricky part.  Your hair grows in cycles, so it may take 3 months before you actually see some problem with your hair.  Here is a great site to read more about your thyroid and fast thinning hair.

Recognizing this can get you on the right road to not only getting your hair back or preventing further loss, but also solving the underlying problem.

Thinning Hair or Hair Loss?

Your Body May Be Trying To Tell You Something.

What if we looked at hair thinning or loss as something beyond what it is on the surface, something greater. While many people look at their thinning of hair or hair loss with frustration, a different approach may be in order.

We should recognize this as our body trying to tell us something, something important. Our body is telling us there is something wrong. Something has gone wrong to cause this presentation.

Why should we look at it this way? Because thinning hair or hair loss is not a normal occurrence.

Once we figure out what is wrong, then we can fix the problem. Does this guarantee that your hair will return? No...but it might.

Even if it doesn't, there is still some problem that needs to be addressed.

So, what's the problem? What causes thinning hair?

If there was an answer to that question, the person who got a patten on it would instantly become one of the wealthiest humans on the planet.

Many, many things can cause these problems: thyroid problems, hormone imbalances, cancer, chemotherapy and other medications, nutrient deficiencies and overdoses, environmental toxins, etc. Each comes with its own therapy.

What about the major ones?

In this lens, I am going to discuss one of the major problems with with those with androgenetic alopecia (a type of hair loss due to hormone imbalance). The main culprit in this disorder is from Dihydrotestosterone (DHT).

DHT is produced when testosterone is acted upon by an enzyme called Type II 5-alpha reductase. You don't need to know that, but you do need to know how to limit the production of DHT.

First you would want your hormone levels measured ad see where is problem is located. It could be a sex hormone, stress hormone, thyroid hormone, etc. They are all linked in one way or another. Once you know which area to target, your treatment can be more precise, resulting in better results.

Second would be to try to slow down what is already taking place. It would be beneficial to know how to do things that limit the amount of Type II 5-alpha reductase that is being used to make the DHT. Things like green tea, zinc, Gamma Linolenic acid (GLA, found in evening promise oil and black current seed oil) and Propecia all work to do this.

Third, other topical treatments have also been recorded as effective. Using oils such as emu oil, sesame oil and garlic oil have all been shown to help by massaging into the skull before taking a shower. Cayenne pepper, ginger and garlic have been added to the oils to help stimulate circulation to the area, as well as serve as an anti-fungal, antibacterial and antiviral agent. Olive oil has also been used overnight by rapping your hair in a towel.

The reason why these may help is because DHT is stored in the hair's oil glands. Oil glands expand their territory in bald spot, thereby increasing DHT to other hair follicles in greater amounts. These oils may work on the hair oils to suppress DHT's effects and prevent it from spreading to healthier hair follicles.

There are millions of people that fall into this category that might find this information useful, while others it does nothing for them.

In order to get results, you need to get informed first. Listen to your body, find the underlying problem and you will find your answer.

Alopecia Areata

One Lady's Thoughts

Alopecia areata is a problem of hair loss with an unknown cause. Some believe that it is caused by an autoimmune disorder (though there is some evidence against this).

Medical doctors have classically treated this condition through medication that aims at stimulating hair growth, decreasing inflammation and suppressing the immune system.

Doctors that practice functional medicine would utilize diet, lifestyle changes and supplementation to address the issue. These doctors (myself included) would also address hair regrowth and inflammation, but would take a different approach to the autoimmune disorder.

We would perform specific test (stool analysis and allergy testing) and see if we could locate specific offenders.

Here is how it works: These offenders are made up of protein structures that sometimes looks similar to protein structures in our own body. If these offenders make it into our blood stream (through the gut lining, a wound, etc.), our body sees it as a problem. It then tags these protein structures, as well as the one's that look similar to it. Our immune system then attacks the tagged proteins (which is normally how our defense system works).

Say that our body tags areas around the hair follicle. Then our immune system attacks the hair follicles and destroys them.

We would use things that would improve the gut lining (glutamine, probiotics, aloe, etc) and kill off the pathogen (oil of oregano, garlic, tea tree oil, etc.). Stop the pathogen, shut off its means of entering the blood system and stop the destruction of the hair.
