What Are Bed Bugs, What Do They Look Like, and HOW Can You Get Rid Of Them?

There has been a good bit of debate as to whether bed bugs really cause a health threat or not, but in my opinion, any creature that bites you and sucks your blood CAN'T be good. Bad for me or not, I am all about learning how to get rid of bed bugs!

Reality is, for most of us, just the THOUGHT of bed bugs creeps us out. C'mon, who WANTS to sleep with bugs in their sheets and bed?

I sure don't!

What Do Bed Bugs Look Like?

Bed Bugs look like a very small, flat, brown, wingless, BUG. They are really, really small, but can cause serious problems for many people.

Baby bed bugs are about the size of a seed (like the seed on a poppyseed bagel), but adult bed bugs can be as big as a quarter of an inch. So yes, you CAN see bed bugs well enough to be able to identify them in your bed.

Where Do Bed Bugs Come From?

Bed bugs can come from many places. All you need to travel to one infested hotel room, have one of them buggers jump in your suitcase and go home with you....then YOU have bed bugs.

Second-furniture is a common way for bed bugs to get into your home. Also, those living in close proximity to their neighbors (such as an apartment or high-rise) are more at risk of bed bugs spreading from unit to unit.

What Causes Bed Bugs?

Contrary to popular belief, bed bugs are NOT caused by dirty living conditions. Now, I'm not saying that dirty living conditions can also involve bed bugs, I'm saying that just because someone has bed bugs does not mean they aren't "clean".

Bed bugs travel. You go somewhere that has bed bugs and odds are good that you'll bring home with ya. If your kids spend the night with a friend who has them, they'll bring 'em home too.

How to you get rid of bed bugs?

Once you have identified that you have bed bugs in your home, the next primary goal is to get rid of them. Yup, time to kill bed bugs!

There are many chemicals, sprays, powders, and other insecticides on the market - and some work pretty well (you can read about the best bed bugs spray here) - but chemicals alone aren't going to help you get rid of bed bugs.
